Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

It is not as vast as the National Archaelogical Museum nor as fancy as Acropolis Museum. But it became my favourite in Athens.
Good collection of vases (beautifully crafted!) and well preserved.
And the gold artifiacts showed the amazing level of ancient Greek cratfmanship.
The museum opened till late hours while other places closed down at 3pm or 4pm (5pm at the latest).
And the coffee shop in the museum serves good coffee. It was very nice place to rest your tired feet.

Well laid out very interesting exhibits. What we like were the detailed explanations and commentaries by the exhibits. Walking distance from the Plaka.

Perhaps not surprising that a private collection should contain a mix of all sorts, but this is a great mixed bag of eras, types and visiting exhibitions. The building is lovely and must have been amazing as a private house. The ground floor is essentially ancient and progresses towards more art oriented exhibits at the top including some wonderfully quirky items from the development of the new Greek state. the costume collection is impressive. This is not a huge museum so three hours is plenty enough to do it. I agree that the shop is not great especially as it does not sell all the sort of things you would expect. Cafe has a nice view and the staff are friendly.

this museum has an amazing collection of gold jewelry. Nice place. The top floor has sort of craft and daily life exhibits which is also worthwhile. Shop isn't that great...

This museum has a little bit of everything so if you only have limited time this may be the perfect choice for you. Plus they are open late on Thursdays (till Midnight). Plus their cafe serves good food and has an amazing view.
