“Worth the trip”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

Accessible via the subway and a 6 block walk. Very traditional museum showcasing amazing finds from around Greece. 2 hrs is about all you'll need inside.

“The largest Collection of Ancient Greek”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

The National Archaeological Museum (Greek: Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο) in Athens is one of the greatest museums in the world and has the largest collection of ancient Greek artifacts. It was founded in 1829 as the first Greek national archaeological museum on Aegina Island. It was originally named The Central Museum but was later renamed to its current name in 1881. The current Museum in central Athens began construction in 1866 and was completed in 1889. Its collection was carefully sealed in special protective boxes and buried during World War II to avoid damage.

We only spent about 1.5 hours at the museum. I didn’t have enough time to read the details about the displays. The collections cover from Prehistory to Late Antiquity of Greek history. You can see lots of statues, jewels, ceramics, and utensils. Only a few of the statues are in one piece, but most of them are not. Guests are asked not to touch and not to take flash pictures during their visit the museum. The artworks outside the museum are also attractive. It is difficult to find an opportunity to take photos without crowd blocking the way. If you only have one hour and would like to see the museum highlights during your visit , you should prepare in advance. Luckily, Greek Landscapes does the homework for us. Check their website, and you will find the suggested itinerary.

The museum is accessible by the Athens metro. The nearest stations are Viktoria station and Omonia station. The museum includes a gift shop with artifact replicas and a café in the sculpture garden. The National Archaeological Museum should be on your list of must-see sights while visiting Athens, Greece.

“Superb!”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

One of the best in the word. Don't miss it! Loved it all! Gold, Mycenae, MInoa, vases, vases, vases. If you love history then you must go. If you do not, why are you in Greece?
