OK for admirers of ancient art (especially for a few key pieces) but if your time in Athens is limited, spend it in the Agora and the Acropolis. I feel like my experience was ruined because of a grumpy old Greek man that yelled at us for taking pictures with the sculptures. Even though photography is allowed, he told us that if we wanted to pose with the artwork, we should just go to a photo studio. This museum needs to train it's employees on how to treat their guests.

This museum is chock full of treasures from Classical Greece. The quality of the artifacts and the settings are well worth a visit. It's a must see for lovers or art and history. You can spend all day and soak in the culture and art or zip through and hit the highlights. Either way make time to see this as their are artifacts here that can only be seen here.

If you've visited (or will visit) some of the many ancient archeological sites in Greece, this museum will help you place in context the artistic works of the first Greek civilization in Mycenae around 1600 B.C. all the way through the Roman period in the first few centuries A.D. Allow plenty of time, and don't be discouraged if some rooms are closed off as this seems to happen with little rhyme or reason. You will still be able to see everything of major importance.

As we had very limited time we decided to be selective & focused on The Temporary Antikythera exhibition where they display the 1st computer of over 2000 years ago.

Also the Thera Exhibition was well worth visiting.

We took our family of 5 to the museum and spent an hour and a half there, but we could have spent 3 hours easily. The entrance was hard to believe what we are looking at-- actual ancient ruins left in their natural state covered with a glass floor. Once we entered, the amount of security was a little overwhelming but impressive. The artifacts were showcased in a way that took my breath away-- each turn highlighting more and more impressive finds. A must see in Athens!
