Even though I have been before, its still one of those wow moments when you see it again. Amazing at night all lit up and great views, when you get up closer.

The temple of Athena Parthenos, built on the Acropolis in 447–432 bc by Pericles to honor Athens' patron goddess and to commemorate the recent Greek victory over the Persians. It was designed by Ictinus and Callicrates with sculptures by Phidias. Is fascinating how still stands on top of the hill overlooking the city of Athens so many thousand years... Amazing!

History, monument, views - wonderful and breath-taking!
Me plus family (2 kids amongst us) visited Parthenon on a 'free day'.
We were not aware about 'free days' before coming to Athens, we just spotted this 'offer' of 'free entry days' an evening before - we visited Athens for 3 days only.
Arrived at the gate about 11am. We got free tickets and entered through a gate. We haven't expected such a big crowd. Thousand of people? No idea, we were not able to count, we had to fight for survival! Very poor organisation, massive crowd and a scary experience! There were elderly people and small babies in pushchairs.
It wasn't one off 'free day', they do it periodically. Why no thinking then????

The number one tourist attraction of Athens, whose beauty is beyond words, whether viewed in sunlight or lit up after dark. Although there are thousands of visitors at most times, it is well organized and the lines flow smoothly.

Parthenon (/ˈpɑːrθəˌnɒn, -nən/; Ancient Greek: Παρθενών; Greek: Παρθενώνας, Parthenónas) is a former temple[4][5] on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power. It was completed in 438 BC, although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered the zenith of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece.
The grandure and majestic sculptures are treasures.

This was one of the top attractions on our must see list. The Parthenon did not disappoint. Towering above the city we could view it from many places during our strolls. But to be up there and to stand next to the Parthenon was absolutely breath-taking.
We bought a combined ticket from one of the quieter sites to give us an opportunity to go early. Luckily we could skip the long ticket line and go in directly. This was a good move as it got very busy and hot late morning.

It's a hike, but the view is marvelous. Make sure you do not wear heels or slippery shoes because the marble is worn and you may slip and fall. Bring your camera.
