Well worth the visit. Wear good walking shoes. Well signed posted. Good views. Very interesting how they are repairing the temples. The site is much bigger than we thought and very open which we expected.

We had visited this several years ago while on a cruise but had the excursion with so many people.
This time we had a fabulous private guide who tailored it to us. He gave us so much info about the history & architecture. It was a hot, muggy day & we were able to do it at our pace. He said the elevator in the back did not allow to see all the structures.
On our way home days later we ran into another couple who said the day they were there, the wind was so strong that it almost knocked them over. But, just like all trips, the weather is whatever it is.
It was such a great experience that we invited our guide in to have a drink as our guest.
Truly a great experience

Difficult to really describe the feeling seeing the acropolis and the Parthenon. The sheer age of the monuments was awe inspiring. A great engineering feat all those years ago.

Top attraction of Athens, even if the complex cannot be visited during the evening or night, it is one of the most beautiful views of Athens. At least for us, a family of four, it was! The atmosphere, the silence, the sweet light surrounding the whole complex throw it into another world, into another dimension, closer to gods and to the ancient Greece. Spectacular view of Athens from above, melting the sound of the city and the lights in a perfect balance with the silence and greatness of the temple. There is definitely a certain kind of energy that makes you let behind all the small and useful worries and thoughts and just live the moment! There is a certain big stone somewhere between the Acropolis and Hefaistos temple where everybody gets around when the evening falls in order to see one of the most beautiful sunsets in Athens. Which is great! Even if you have to climb in order to get there, the prize you get when on top compliments you with a very special feeling.

The walk is not that bad BUT it is slippery so good sturdy shoes are a must for everyone. Walk up to entrance is a small hike but it is not overwhelming. Unless you’re on a guided tour, expect to walk around for about an hour. Even though it was cooler in November, it got warm, so a sweater you can take off is recommended. Bring water, too. They have a cafe at the entry but only sparkling water. Also if you go earlier I. The day, the crowds are much smaller, so you can get better photos.

Viewing the Acropolis from afar especially at night is quite magical. Up close, however, the magic is somewhat less. Despite visiting early in the morning out of season there were crowds of tourists. Once inside I inquired about the toilets and was told they were outside or there was one at the top of the hill. This latter I believe is one of the Greek myths I read as a child. Anyway that aside the monument resembles a rather untidy building site. There is no obvious route to take and the labeling is practically non existent. Yes there are a few boards with information (mostly about the excavations) which are surrounded by people but there is little to describe what you are looking at. Not particularly informative overall and without a scrap of atmosphere.

No visit to Athens is complete without visiting the Acropolis. The worst part is the heat and crowds, so be prepared with bottled water and comfortable clothing. You'll be doing a lot of walking over uneven terrain.

Acropolis, an Ancient City in the Modern City of Athens. Think, how many important people passed from Acropolis, how many walked this hill over the thousands of the years... Imagine, how many more will walk and touch this holy soil and Acropolis & Parthenon will be imperiously standing on the hill, overlooking proudly the City of Athens through the years!!!
