Owner description: The most famous site in all of Athens, this large hill lies in the center of the city and contains a cluster of ancient ruins.

This is the center of the Greek ancient history and the center of the Western civilization. Cannot miss this site if you are in Athens. The Parthenon and the other few temples are magnificent and if you can imagine the thousands of old greeks meeting here then you can have a pretty good image of what that civilization was like. The temples are beautiful, even though the ravages of time are right then and there but are still mesmerizing. Start very early in the morning to precede the crowd and avoid the heat of the midday.

Too bad we missed Akropolis with our tour but we definitely wanted to visit it during our stay in Athens so we decided to go on our second day of our trip. It was a spectacular monument!! It has also a great view of Athens that you take a lot of pictures there!! You cannot miss it at all if in Athens!!!

The only thing in Athens worth visiting, other than Olympic Stadium. Show your student pass and you get free entry. Or else pay 12Euros for normal adults.

Be prepared for the hot sun, so go in the morning and bring lots of water. There are many tourist groups in the afternoon as well. Spend at least or at most 2hours in there. Visit the new museum at the foot of the acropolis. Free for students too.

Arrive early, beat the crowds and the heat! And use your student ID to get a discount if you can. We didn't use a guide as it didn't seem necessary- my sister and I would eavesdrop on other groups as there were so many. We also liked the idea of going through Acropolis on our own time and not shuffling around with a big group. Either way, this is a must see! And the Acropolis is beautiful when lit up at night!

The Acropolis is the ancient jewel of Athens and the entire tourist industry of the city seemingly revolves around it. Don't be dissuaded by the comments about it being a gruelling climb etc, it is very manageable and simply can't be missed.

Note:

-It opens at 8am. The tour groups start to appear around 8:30. Get there before then for unobscured views and photos... and a degree of serenity.

-Take water. It's a very manageable climb. .. but Apollo ensures the Athenian sun is hot in summer... so be prepared.
