I could have passed. it was a knock off of the American kids Christmas villages...face painting, ice skating, kids singing carols, a few food and crafts booths.

Athens used to be powered by a big gas factory a few decades ago. The whole factory area has been revamped and today it is a nice walking area, with a cafe. You can see the old buildings and, especially in the summer, there are cultural events (concerts, exhibitions, etc) taking place. Plus, right next to the Techonopolis is the Gazi area, which means bars, restaurants, clubs, etc.

When I was there they had a free jazz festival there and it was full of only locals. It's a little far afield but worth the walk over. It's a former gas plant that has been converted into a performance space.

Technopolis is a former industrial area close to Athens center and easy accessible by the Metro in station Keramikos (line3).

This place and surroundings are full of life. Check out for the program of events. There are events for everyone, concerts of various types of music, shows and exhibitions, bazaars of artists, photography exhibitions etc. I love this place especially when it is full of people. Some of the events have free entrance especially flea type markets where you can find pieces of art, handmade jewelry or clothes in very good prices.

Few days ago there was an bazaar of vinyl records, last weekend I have been to a perfect exhibition with traditional food products from all over Greece. In every stand you could taste everything for free! Last summer I was there for a music festival and then for a book bazaar and a couple of artistic exhibitions and markets .

But again you have to check for the program if there is nothing that you are interest in you can just visit the museum. Few months ago was inaugurated an industrial museum that everyone can visit between 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. on summer and also have a guided tour to the exhibits. I have not seen it yet but I will go for sure in a “quiet” day so as to sit also to its marvelous café and relax. When place is not full of people I believe is best for amateur photographers, the spots are very beautiful.

The square around Technopolis is also a place full of young people strolling around. There are also a lot of restaurants and cafes.

You read technopolis and you imagine a modern technology dome. Well it's not. Yeah, it always features modern exhibitions, weird collections, avant-guard artists but...all that happens in an old brick-stone building complex where the gas production site once was. If you like Tate Modern, this is as close as you'll get in Greece. Great walk around in Keramikos, very artistic area, truly avant-guard so beware if you are a classy person - that place is not for you!
