The Ideal restaurant on Panepistimiou in Athens is where the Greeks go, but you will also find the backpackers and tourists alike...although some tourists would be turned off at the entrance...where inside the glass are displayed the dishes they offer...somehow they just don't look appetizing--BUT, the food is authentic Greek cuisine and is very good. The avgolemono soup is probably the chef's mother's recipe and the salads are fresh and delicious...they will bring you any type of salad you want! You can get a great Meze plate here as well. The main entrees are all good...from spaghetti to fish dishes to meat and chicken dishes and of course the traditional Greek cuisines--mousaka, keftethes, lamb, dolmathes, etc. The entryway is small, but the restaurant is quite large and open as you make your way to the back. The waiters are all seasoned and attentive and not rude or impatient. They love tourists and will engage in conversation and give you travel tips for Athens and the surrounding areas. I lived in Greece for 6 years and would often have lunch at Ideal when shopping in Athens. I would recommend Ideal to everyone. Don't let the entrance fool you, you will have a great meal.
