“For that extra special service...bliss”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Another trip to the wonderful Koh Samui and another stay at our home away from home, Sala Samui.
This time, travelling for the Mr's 40th birthday, nothing was too much trouble for this team of kind, friendly and dedicated people. Particular mention to Daniel, the food and beverage manager, for organising so much for us prior to our arrival.
And what a great touch, putting us in the same villa as before!
Dick, thank you again to the whole team for making Marks birthday something really special. And thank you to the great wait staff including Uam and Jim for always making us smile.
Finger crossed for a return early next year :)

Room Tip: Go for a pool villa. It's definitely worth the extra $.

What an experience, from the moment you arrive at the hotel you are greeted by friendly faces. The check in was an experience, we were greeted by the general manager Dick Samarro who constantly made himself available to ensure our stay was everything we wished.

The staff were simply amazing and really did make our stay fantastic, we frequented happy hour (there are 3 different times) and were always greeted by happy faces who conversed with us and interacted with everyone around. The restaurant staff were equally attentive to service. Although it was slightly priced compared other restaurants you pay for what you get, an amazing meal and experience.

Our room was a pool villa, large and spacious with lots of character, it was clean, had two airconditioners and the outdoor bathroom which was awesome. We loved it.

The activities are abundant to do, We loved the national park boat ride and snorkling, it is well worth it. We also did the elephant trekking and Zoo, The zoo is nice if you like animal performances and doing tricks. We weren't fans.

The beach is great and water clean, although its in the bay the clearness isn't as good as Chaweng beach however you don't get booming music. Its quiet and peaceful.

The hotel is close enough to Chaweng (party central) to be a $10 cab/300Baht or shuttle bus but a million miles away to not be poked and prodded to sign up to Absolute timeshare or buy something from the street vendors. If someone walks up to you with a scratchy and says you have won and IPAD or $1000USD yes its too good to be true and yes its going to cost you money at somepoint.

We certainly recommend the Sala Samui and hope to return again sometime. Thank you to all the staff who made our stay so perfect.

We signed up to the Sala Spa Retreat package that provided 6.5 hours of spa over 3-days. Included breakfast, hotel transfers and a garden pool villa. We booked direct through the hotel website and communication was good. Impressive was the pre-checklist which asked about the type of body soap you wanted, the type of rooms and additional services.

We were met at the airport and it was a short trip to to Sala itself. Checkin was not a hassle but what was is the room readiness. Checkin was 4pm and we arrived at 10am so it was a wait .. however the hotel was great in the sense they offered complementary breakfast (but only if you arrive before 11am). They also offered other rooms where you could use to shower whilst waiting for your own room. One little sticking point to me was that our bags were actually left at the reception area - just sitting there. Eventually after seeing it there a few times, I notified the staff who promptly got it secured away.

Location-wise - Sala Samui is in the Cheong-mon area .. it's actually off the main street. The main street is full of eatries (Long Table 2, Krua Thai, Khon Thai, Charlie Chaplin, Garland is where we tried) and shops - really a 5 minute walk outside so it's convenient. What we didn't like was that to get to the main street, you have to walk out and annoying is the number of stray dogs around - something about the people feeding them but they are intimidating. Also - dog poo everywhere so be careful where you walk especially on the grass area. The side road is where you get cars and bikes speeding through so care is needed. Cheong-mon main street is small - some massage stores (Aromatic Massage is recommended), tailors and souvenirs.

Food-wise - we only had the breakfast but that was fantastic. Yes - the spread is not that big but you have a buffet, an egg section and you can choose as many items off a menu. Although you can also do breakfast room service ALL day .. and that is part of the package, we didn't use it. Juices and shakes are also part of the deal ! ... including a variety of coffee and tea ... where else provides something like this.

Spa-wise - we had 6.5 hours of spa spread over 3 days. Blissful and worth the package because if you add up everything, it would cost more. The amount of choices of oil, scrubs and massage types can be confusing. Also for a 3-day package, it's best to book early to get the time you want.

Room-wise - we opted for a Garden Pool Villa as that has been something I always wanted.

Pro:
- You have a pool ! .. what more ! .. it's lighted up at night so a night swim is possible and it's secluded. What would make it great is if that is a jacuzzi too !! ... Also note that the dept of the villa pool is 1.5 metres ! ... One thing great of the pool was that the water was warm most times - it wasn't freezing cold and after a rain storm, it was warm too.
- Amenities and features are great - mini bar, coffee machine, DVD player, TV, speakers to jack in your music players, water etc. There is a safe. Hotel is also thoughtful to provide umbrellas, bathrobes, fluffy slippers (not the cheap kind), a bag for beach use ... It's all this thoughtful things that count.
- Bed was comfortable to sleep in.
- Outdoor bathroom and toilet ... ok - some people may not like it but it adds to the ambience I think. Open air - again see comment about insects ... but again never had any problems with it. There are steps so at night it can be tricky to navigate.

Con:
- A bench where everything sits is behind the bed. The bench can be crammed especially with lights, fruit bowls, the hotel books ... trying to clear space for the laptop is a hassle. We received a cake and that was a problem eventually putting the plate somewhere.
- Limited power sockets - 2 on each side of the bench (note - US type) and sometimes the sockets are close to each other and if you have a bulky plug that was it.
- Air con control was flaky - sometimes it was cold - sometimes it was warm - makes sleeping hard at night either was too cold for my wife or too warm for me.
- Mosquito coils and numerous insect repellents .. this tells you a lot. At night, there are many mosquitos and insects. During the turndown service, they will spray your room with insecticide. It's not a big deal if you know what to do eg: don't turn on lights at night so not to attract insects, don't open doors late in the evening or early morning. Burn a mosquito coil early in the morning in the bathroom.

Summary ....

The package we had was value for money. The hotel is great and so is the service. Recommend it if you really want a pool villa ... and you are ok being in a small area unlike Chaweng. Will I come back ? ... Maybe but that's more me because I have already explored the area and I am sure there are parts of Koh Samui to experience first.

Room Tip: We stayed at the Garden Pool Villa. Our villa was 54 but location was right at the back of a courtya...

Sala Samui stood out as having everything I wanted and more online and, thanks to excellent service, was better than I expected. From being met at the airport by the driver who had cold washers and water with him, to the check-in complete with Mojitea mocktails, to the luxurious pool villa and two beachfront pools, everything was amazing. The staff were friendly and always very helpful. The breakfast buffet was lovely. Lying on the sun loungers on the beach with free iced water and pineapple delivered, the happy hours (3 hours per day in total) and pool and beach service in general.

The beach itself was clean but I didn't find the water appealing and people tended to spend their time on the sun loungers rather than in the ocean. With three pools to choose from, including the in-villa pool, I didn't feel like this was an issue.

We ate room service or at the restaurant for every meal and they were all excellent.

Thanks, Sala for making our first resort holiday so memorable. If only we were able to stay longer than three nights.

Room Tip: We were in villa 1. I noticed a previous review saying it was noisy but we had no issues with this a...

Upon arrival, there was champagne on ice. The rooms were clean, cool and the private pools sparkling and inviting. Staff were very welcoming and amenities in the resort very relaxing and peaceful. All of the staff were helpful and smiling, the boys on towel/beach duty were so accommodating, even kept us supplied with ice water and fruit. Local restaurants had beautiful food and the resort restaurant was not overpriced as can happen. A place to go back.

Room Tip: Our rooms were amazing, we had 3 pool villas and they were all the same. Couldn't fault any of...

My husband and I spent 12 nights here with two other couples and we had a great time. The food is good and the staff are terrific they go out of their way to make your stay extra special. Special thanks to the pool boys who were always on hand to set up the sunloungers even without us asking, they brought us cold water to drink regularly and cold fruit to eat. Breakfast was great and after the first couple of days the staff knew what coffee etc all six of us had. The seafood buffet is to die for and so is the pork belly! Great happy hour which is actually 3 hours with plenty of cocktails to choose from. The Italian restaurant is not really up to a five star restaurant quality perhaps it should be just classed as a pizza/pasta café as the pizza's are great but not really much else. The main restaurant has entertainment many nights and these were great also. There are also plenty of nice cheap restaurants within 5 minutes walk along the beach which are great for a change. I would highly recommend Sala Samui to anyone who wants to listen and all six of us will be back next year. Thanks Sala Samui for a great holiday!

Room Tip: Definitely go for a Sala Pool Villa
