We were so glad that we stayed here and not in Chaweng. The hotel was lovely, very comfortable rooms, well designed, fab bathroom and enormous (8 foot) bed. Balcony with a fan, loungers and airer. We had the premium room (cheapest) If you are worried about weight, then don't worry about towels, as you can have as many towels as you need at the pool house. We used the pool nearer to the reception with the stone monkey fountains which was so relaxing. try to have a swim after dark! If you have kids, the other boatshaped pool nearer to the beach is ideal. The hotel had a very good ambience, which many nationalities, and caters for all types although singles looking for full on nightlife might feel left wanting. The gardens are spectacular with formal ponds (complete with frogs!) and tropical waterlillies, wooden walkways through the rice barges, orchids everywhere, and fragrant blossoms. It is expensive to eat at the hotel, although it looked nice, and the drinks were about 3 times the price as elsewhere on the beach which is a shame as it meant that the bar was fairly quiet in the evening. There are plenty of bars/restaurants next to the hotel on the beach. The BBQ at Honey, turn right at hotel was very good with a decent help yourself salad, and inexpensive. In the village (none of the towns are pretty!) there were quite a few places to eat. We were very impressed with one called "Garland" which had a good buzz to it as well. I did the cooking course at the hotel which was good for £20. Also we rented a jeep via the hotel which was 1,000 barts a day (£20) all in. We did not even need our licenses which had forgotten to bring. It is well worth exploring the island, although we did not get much of a look at the waterfalls as I guess it is better when it has rained. It was really expensive to go on an elephant but it appeared that we paid the same as if we had had an organised trip, so we should have done a bit more homework on that. The trip to Ang Thong national park Islands was fantastic (1,000 barts) including lunch. This was a nice part of the island with a lovely beach and views. Each to his own but I would not recommend Chaweng (the main resort) to anyone. All in all we really enjoyed this charming hotel.

The Imperial Boat House Hotel is located about 7 minutes drive outside of Chaweng, which is the main tourist area of bars, restaurants and shops. Fortunately the hotel offers a minibus shuttle service which we took advantage of every night.
The hotel has a colonial feel to the decor and while the main reception is nice, I was disappointed with our room. It was very big however all the decoration and furniture, particularly the bathroom, looked quite dated and worn. Unfortunately it wasn't that clean either; on the day we arrived I had to call reception to ask them to clean the bathroom again as there were long black hairs on the floor and in the plughole of the shower - no idea how the cleaner missed that! Also the tiles around the shower didn't look like they'd been cleaned in a while. The bed sheets had a tear in them and on the whole this gave everything a slightly shabby feel. To add to this dated feeling, every night when I was having a shower our room would have a complete power cut - no hot water, no light and no aircon. It just affected our room and we'd call reception who would send an engineer promptly who seemed to fix it in the fuse box but it clearly wasn't a long-term solution as it happened again each night! By the 4th night we were quite annoyed at the fact that this was an ongoing problem so reception did offer us both a free massage which we appreciated. However it didn't stop the same problem happening the next night and I have little faith that this was rectified for the next guests in that room!
Also some of the equipment in the gym was not working and again it didn't seem particularly clean; we only used it a couple of times.
The service we received was mixed. Reception staff were polite but not too friendly (maybe due to our powercut issues!): On our last night we tried to book a taxi to take us to the airport early the next morning. The reception staff told us we had in fact got a transfer arranged as part of our package and that we didn't need to book a taxi - they showed us the transfer slip and told us to just reconfirm the next morning. The next day the dayshift reception staff had no idea about this and said we didn't have a tranfer. They changed their minds about this a couple of times before eventually saying the hotel staff would give us a lift to the airport. When we got to the airport the driver then asked us for payment! I would have expected this transfer to be free due to the confusing and mistaken messages from reception about tranfers.
In contrast the pool bar staff and breakfast staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.
On the positive side, the hotel is in a great beach front location, it has a big, clean pool and great beach front/pool bar. The bar food is overpriced for what it is but you can eat elsewhere along the beach.
To summarise there are new resorts being built all around (including one right next door when we stayed) and I think the Imperial Boat House needs an overhaul to keep up with the competition. It's for this reason I'd probably stay at one of the slightly newer resorts next time.

Hello ally
I have just returned from thialand and hopethis is of use to you
If you want a quite resort and friendly locals with a very cheap local bar and restaurant scene wihin walking distance of hotel then the Imperial boathouse is for you.
no beach
The hotel location and grounds are wonderful the pools are really nice and the service is top rate 5* with waiter service at the pool and on the beac [20% extra] which you can aviod if you walk 50 yardsdown beach to supermarket.
7/11 SUPRMARKET OPPISITE the front of hotel with money change and ATM MACHINE CLOSE BY
Do not change any money in England as the rate
is better there more so in Bangkok airport . Be preparedred to haggle over ev ery price offered 50% is about right
Directly in front of the hotel is a Tailors shop Hugo Boss which I can recommend very highly The two brothers who own it are really nice people and go the extra mile to ensure your satisfaction at a really good price
Thats the good news the downside the rooms are a bit dated and the bathrooms need a good overhaul we had an extra matress added on top of ours because it was so hard
But location service and hotel grounds make this a fantastic base for a couple or family looking for a quite holiday

Got upgraded to a Boat House near the beach and we had a very relaxing holiday. Barge was very cosy and clean and not a bug or ant to be seen in the room.
Good hearty breakfast, nice lunch by the pool and very romantic buffet dinner on the beach. This hotel had it all. Great service, all smiles and friendly.
The pool was fab and water just the right temp. The beach so close and again water clear and warm.
Great spot, nice and quiet, highly recommend this hotel

Visited Samui in November which isn't the busiest time of year. First impressions of the hotel were fab, lovely reception area, and the room was spacious, clean, huge bath and lovely separate shower. Two pool areas, a couple of bars, and the hotel literally on the beach. Breakfast was great, lots of choice, and items made to order. The 'girls' doing massages, nails etc were good and not too pushy.

I guess the not so good parts have been mentioned already. And whilst we were there the hotel had recently appointed a new manager who was keen to receive any feedback. We were honest and explained that the hotel had a lot of good points. The staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful. Some of the communal areas were looking a bit shabby, and the hotel didn't seem to have an area for guests to socialise. The bar by the beach was lovely and much more could have been made of this area. The restaurant was dead every night we were there. Whilst appreciate its a four star hotel the prices being charged by local restaurants were 80% cheaper.

We triend a few of the local restaurants which were very good. It was a bit further from Chaweng then I'd thought, but having visited Chaweng a couple of times for a change of scenery it wasn't really my kind of place, too commercialised and characterless. Having said that the food at the Irish bar was very good if you start to tire of traditional thai, and the free 'ladyboy' show was fun. I thought there would be a catch, but the drinks were reasonably priced. The catch came at the end if you wanted a photo of them, as they wanted tips - but it was worth it.

Think the hotel had a bit of a cheek to charge for internet, and the shuttle into Chaweng.

I would stay at this hotel again, but I wouldn't rush back or tell friends they must go. But I do look back with fondness at the photographs, we had a lovely time, maybe my expectations were a little too high.

The hotel is big and with the facilities expected of a hotel in its class.

The two pools are nice and kept clean. The restaurant is big and serves good but costy food. Breakfast buffet is huge and with a good selection for most tastes. The garden and other areas are kept nice and clean with lush bushes etc.

The beach is very nice and with many other hotelrestaurants facing it. That gives all visitors the opportunity to dine out instead of the hotel - which in most cases is also the cheaper option here.

We were happy with the hotel versus the price we paid - but decided to spend our remaining 4 nights on Samui in another hotel instead. Imperial Boat House is nice, clean and with all the expected service - but it is looking a bit worn here and there and we decided to find something smaller with fewer guests and not such a huge dining area for the buffet etc.

My review is more specific as I did not actually stay at the Imperial Boat House Hotel itself, but was lucky enough to experience the skills and expertise of Ashish from Timmy's 2 Tailor at the hotel. I originally was getting some suits made at Timmy's at Chaweng beach, but after Timmy went away, I had the pleasure of meeting Ashish who runs Timmy's 2 at the Imperial Boat House. I decided to get a suit made and Ashish was friendly, helpful and very professional. The thing I liked the most was that he was not pushy like other tailors in Samui and you didn't need to ask for a discount the prices were so good.

For anyone considering staying at the Imperial Boat House, VISIT TIMMY'S 2! For those who aren't staying, visit anyway as TIMMY'S 2 is one of the best options for Samui. Well done!
