“Superb hotel,staff and facilities”
Reviewed April 19, 2009

My wife and I have just returned from our first Asian experience and were so glad we chose to spend it at the Imperial Boathouse hotel.Ignore all the petty comments some people make -this is an excellent hotel with wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. The rooms and facilties were of a high standard. We were upgraded to a premier room because one was available. The setitng is wonderful-immaculate gardens and pool complex were perfect-direct access on to probably the best beach in the area-very safe, shallow and never crowded. Always plenty of sunlounges by the pools and beach. We had the experience of a mini monsoon one afternoon which soon blew over and returned back to hot sunny weather-it was reassuring to see how the hotel dealt with this. The breakfast was very good with all the usual choices to cater for European and Asian customers. The special events for Songkran(Thai New Year) were very entertaining with excellent food.Yes you do pay more in the hotel than out on the main street or beach restaurants but that is to be expected. The two nights we ate at the hotel were about £15 each for a monster Thai buffet.
Go here with absolute confidence that you will be well taken care of in an amazing setting.
Eating out-the beach restaurants at night are really atmospheric with the sea only a few metres away and they are good value too with meals for two costing £10-£12.Meals on the high street in the choice of small family restaurants are cheaper still and a must to be done-all good food but our favourite was Carol's next to the pavement noodle bar(she is a Thai lady by the way).

Visits-don't use the hotel or travel agent reps! You will get charged significantly more.Directly outside the hotel is a Tour Company run by a lovely Thai lady and they are a third cheaper on all the trips. The Nathong National Park day is a must for 1500 bharts(£30)--awewsome day and value for everything including speedboat trip, kayaking, food, drink, snorkelling, beach buffet and sight seeing tour,Quad biking or elephant riding -you'll be tired but what a day.

Clothing-lots of people travel light and buy clothes in Thailand. We researched all the local tailors for value, quality and service and by far the best place to buy your personally made to measure suits, dresses, shirts and anything is ARMANE Tailors on Cheong Mon main street.Mr Osman and his assistant David gave superb service, quality clothing and great prices-I bought two suits, two shirts and my wife bought three tops-they gave us two fittings to make sure everything was to our satisfaction and even ran my wife around on their moped to go to the hotel to collect some of her belongings. No I didn't get anything reduced for saying this-I just wanted to recommend the best tailors in the area so you don't waste time searching around others.
Finally, you can't come here without experiencing the beach massages. We went to Ning and Mi two lovely Thai women who operate on the beach, 30 metres to the right when you go on to the beach-250 baht(£5) for an hour -if you decide to have a massage you should give them a try-they are so friendly and work really hard..................we went nearly ever day for the Thai aloe vera which helped with the sunburn!

A month after having a fabulous 5 nights in the Imperial Boat House we received an e-mail informing us that a delayed charge had been charged to our visa card for a meal we did not eat in the hotel restaurant. Not only did they incorrectly charge us, they also wrote the credit card details in the e-mail and sent an attachment with photocopies of our passports!! On closer inspection of the bill attached it was for a different room and customer name on it. I have written 4 replies to the intial e-mail with no reply. So the Imperial Boat House have not resolved the issue. We are very disappointed with the lack of professionlism and courtesy shown.

Myself and two friends arrived here at the end of a 2 week break in Thailand without reservations. Given the place was quiet we were given an excellent deal (pay one night get one night free).

The rooms were clean and fitted with all mod cons, including a large bath and separate shower cubicle. The staff were exceptionally friendly and did everything to ensure we were comfortable etc. Food is excellent and the facilities very good as well....especially the lovely pool.

Great location on a quiet beach yet only 5 minute drive away from the nightlife of Chaweng. Having been to Samui (and Koh Phan Ngan) five times previously, this place has now become my number 1 choice of accomodation. Excellent value and a great place for 30-somethings as well as couples/families who want to be near Chaweng but not actually stay there.

Just returned from 2 weeks at the boathouse, thoughts are:
The beach was absolutely beautiful, no litter and pure white sand. The tide goes out half way through the day and it becomes very shallow which is great because you can just lie back in a few inches of water and cool down from the sun! The water was genuinely as warm as a bath! The sea was also lovely and calm so very safe for children. There are quite a few beach sellers who come and stand over you (take ages to go even if you say "no thank you" politely, they just stay there staring at you until you change you mind and buy something!! The massages are fantastic - would def recommend the coconut oil massage and also the foot scrub!
The little restaurants on the beach are wonderful and some even have a little campfire on the beach which gives a great ambience in the evening.
As for the hotel, I dont want this to sound to negative so I will give the good and the bad. We stayed in a premier room which was absolutely lovely - had a big bath and also a separate shower which was larger than average size. When we arrived the bath was filled and had lots of lovely flowers in it which was a nice touch. Lovely sized room and very authentic with lovely teak wood and crisp white sheets.
The maid service wasnt as good as I would have liked - she didnt replenish the room with things liked razors, emery board etc.. each day even though they had been used. The room wasnt "tidied" up as much as we are used to - really just the bed was made and fresh towels were put in. Only two (one large one each) which isnt enough for me because I like one for my hair!!! I know that sounds very petty, but when you are paying thousands of pounds for a good hotel you shouldnt have to get by with just one towel!
The grounds are beautiful and I would really recommend that you go to the Monkey pool which had a very boutique feel about it - nice wooden sun beds (rather than white plastic ones in the main pool) and hardly anyone goes there so its really quiet! That pool was one of the highlights of our stay because it gave a far more exclusive feel to the hotel. The teak rice barges seem to have no privacy at all! We walked past them each day on our way to the beach and they seemed a little dark and dingy and if you were sunbathing on your own terrace, everyone would walk past you each day!
The beach bar was a real disappointment - no atmosphere at all and total rip off. They added service AND tax just for one drink!!! no wonder no one choose to drink there when the bar next door was half the price. Still, it was a real shame because having a nice beach bar in a hotel is really important, its nice to get to know the bar staff etc.. for the duration of the stay, but we didnt get that opportunity unfortunately.
The staff in general were ok - the breakfast staff were the best but I didnt like the reception staff. They seemed moody and acted as though they were a little above helping you!! the two girls in the reception bar were lovely though. The man who gave out the pool tools in the morning (you have to sign to collect AND return them!!) was really grumpy!!
So all in all, if we have paid less for this hotel I would not have minded but it is def overpriced and although the building work didnt disturb me as such, I could def hear it for most of the day.
I would strongly recommend anyone thinking about a trip to koh samui to visit crystal bay which is about a 20 min drive from Cheong mon. The beach was absolutely incredible, like the seychelles - huge smooth rocks and crystal clear water. Only four hotels on the beach so lovely and quiet. Would def recommend the crystal cove hotel which is really cheap and has some incredible boutique rooms which are only about 2000 baht a night!! and the lowest standard ones were 500 baht!! we found this beach and hotel on our second to last night and choose to stay there for our remaining nights we liked it so much. Really cannot recommend it enough.
The weather was perfect for the first week and then it rained for the last 3 or 4 days - which was quite welcome actually because the weather was consistently about 35 degrees up to that point! Still, I felt really sorry for the people arriving into that weather because the last thing you want to see when you have been on a 13 hour flight is rain!! but if its any consolation to people who are reading this, about to go, we got a far better tan on the cloudy/rain days then we did in full sun! and its far more comfortable to sit on the beach with an overcast sky because it isnt as searingly hot!
Oh, just remembered! we had to change room at the boathouse halfway through our stay because there was a rat (yes, a rat!) in the side of our fridge. We had to waste several hours backing up all our stuff and we were moved to a room of the same standard and only got a half hearted "sorry" from reception. The rat spent several nights scuttling around before we knew what it was and my husband saw its horrible little tail escape down the back of the wood panelling. I actually woke up in the middle of the night thinking that someone was trying to break into the room (rats are louder than you would think in the middle of the night!!!
Anyway, as I said before, I dont want this to sound too negative about the boathouse because it certainly wasnt a bad hotel, just not as good as you could get with the same money.
The island was beautiful - you must go to the samui crocodile and viper show - the crocodiles were about 3m long and they put their heads inside their mouths!! and they had the biggest king cobra in aisa. unbelievable stuff!!
Eat senses restaurant in chaweng was v good but quite over priced. Go and see the Xonory band in Coyote in Chaweng - they are incredible!

Stayed here in Feb for 10 nights. Overall fairly good stay, had researched through trip advisor but must say disappointed with Choeng Mon Beach, the main reason we chose this hotel. It is a small beach and as we enjoy long beach walks this was not possible, in a few minutes you can walk to the end. Did not eat at the hotel as more expensive that other beach side restaturants and restaurants outside the hotel. Hotel has a happy hour buy 1 chang beer get another free, this was good value but at other times drinks expensive, waiter sevice plus 17% service charge added on every time which led to us feeling that we cannot then tip on top of this. Pool area nice and clean. Rooms fair, cleaned daily. Breakfast again reasonable choices with good service. Hired suzuki jeep from the hotel no passport required at 700 - 800 baht found this very good value since it is 300 baht to fishermans village and chaeweng each way by taxi. Also friendly service. Found an area called bang por, beach, water and surrounding area gorgeous. Building work next door did not affect us. Come to this area if you want to chill out but would not return as you can easily cover the area by jeep in a couple of days.

The boat suites are spacious, clean and comfortable. The sunchairs on the sundeck are not adjustable so you're probably going to end up by the pool or beach anyway, which of course is also closer to the bar... Quiet location on a nice beach. Food and wine is very good, but pricy. Did not try the dinner buffet. The SPA was a bit disappoiting (not worth the price). Diving service is good, however all the dive trips are by speed boat to Koh Tao. If you are going on a diving holiday you'd rather stay at a hotel on Koh Tao...
