“Really nice hotel - a little too expensive”
Reviewed February 6, 2009

The boat suites are spacious, clean and comfortable. The sunchairs on the sundeck are not adjustable so you're probably going to end up by the pool or beach anyway, which of course is also closer to the bar... Quiet location on a nice beach. Food and wine is very good, but pricy. Did not try the dinner buffet. The SPA was a bit disappoiting (not worth the price). Diving service is good, however all the dive trips are by speed boat to Koh Tao. If you are going on a diving holiday you'd rather stay at a hotel on Koh Tao...

We stayed there from 28th Feb 2008 for 10 nights in a Premier room. We stayed in Bangkok first, booking through Thomson, the high street travel agent; all transfers were dealt with well. We were surprised that there was no Thomson rep at the Imperial BH, there was a Tourismo Asia rep although we didn’t use them. Would have been useful to have the usual introductory meeting but never mind.

Arrival was dealt with well, hotel grounds were super, everywhere clean, room great, won’t duplicate what others have said. In all though, we would recommend waiting until all the building work next door has finished. We had a lot of rain and worked ceased during this but normally there was loud banging quite a lot, which you could hear from the boat pool and the beach. It’s not worth the risk of them having a loud phase when you visit! We weren’t in fact told by Thomson of any building work when we booked, only when we picked up the tickets the week before, which was very bad of them.

The breakfasts were great but we also never ate in the hotel in the evenings because the beach restaurants were so much cheaper and very good. Went to Krystals, Otto, Island View (several times), Island View 2, Khaosan, and Choeng Mon.

Room cleaning was a bit hit and miss, eg. some toiletries not replaced, smeary mirror never cleaned, but generally good with bins emptied and bathroom cleaned, etc. (We did leave tips!) Umbrellas were provided in the room, and we made good use of these. Be sure to check the dial in the fridge – ours was left off when we arrived. Hated the shower and the shower attachment in the bath as the water temperature was never constant from either, it would go from hot to cold to bearable all the time, so showering took 3 times as long as necessary.

It would be very expensive to call home from your hotel room – 360 baht for 3 minutes (£6), minimum charge. 7-Eleven does cards for the phones outside for 300 baht minimum and it looked a very cheap rate per minute but we didn’t try it. Used 7-Eleven for drinks, snacks, etc. as only a couple of minutes from the hotel, to the right. Also very handy little supermarket at Island View, down to the beach and turn right and back inland, behind the book shop. Found nowhere selling DVDs in Choeng Mon, so got these in Chaweng.

The roads in the village had huge puddles like lakes, sandbags and grit everywhere to try and beat the water.

The internet at the hotel was very expensive – 100 baht (1.60) for 15 minutes. Go out of the hotel round the road to the left and there are a couple of internet places, we used the one at the end at 1 baht per minute, minimum charge 20 bahts, a bit slow but fine for the money.

Reception told us that the car hire desk would rent us a jeep for 900 baht but were closed for the evening. Next day the lady at the car desk said reception must have offered another firm and her hire/insurance was better at 1000 baht – no matter it’s only £1.60 more but they should get their act together and either offer a discount or not. We easily got round the island for 400 bahts-worth of petrol. Visited the Butterfly Farm, (170 baht) good but not a must-see. Stop at Tesco Lotus in Chaweng if you can – great store with lots of non-food items!

We also booked a half-day tour and elephant ride with the ‘Tours Booking Center’ on the beach but feel we were overcharged for the ride at Nuama Falls 1, we paid 800 bahts and when we got there if we had not got our tickets already it was a group price of only 600 baht for the ride. It was quite short, only 20 minutes instead of 30, but never mind, it was fun and our mahout took photos of us, well worth his tip, rather than the official photographer at 300 baht.

Saw the Football Golf advertised in the Samui booklet and thought it looked like fun as it was 3 minutes up the road, but they wanted 500 baht each, so that’s £17 for two for an hour’s round – too much by any standards, let alone Samui prices.

In the grounds, watch out for the giant land snails on the walkways – if you saw a woman moving them to the safety of the grass, it was probably me! Also loved the frogs/toads, spotting them was great for something to do in the evenings – what a noise at night!

Really enjoyed our stay there, shame about the weather and the building work though.

We stayed at this hotel in 2002 and absolutely loved it. When we decided to return 6 years later we were really worried that we might be disappointed. To our delight it was as lovely as ever. The layout of the hotel, pools and gardens hasn't changed at all (which we were pleased about) but the rooms have obviously been updated and are lovely. The hotel is rated as a 3 star/3 star plus but deserves to be more.

Service is polite, friendly and efficient. Good buffet breakfast with plenty of choice. Two pools - the one shaped like a boat is huge and the beach area has retained its charm with a good selection of restaurants and a few bars but quite quiet in the evenings and doesn't get crowded by day. Despite being only about 15 minutes from the airport, you are not aware of the planes at all.

Took the family here and stayed on one of their rice boats - these are private, 2 deck large baots in the grounds of the hotel.

It was superb for a family - yes the boats are not new, but traditional Thai build, well maintained and fully air-conditioned - superb for kids.

The food in this hotel is excellent - thier that food is EXCELLENT but they have superb theme nights (italian, seafood etc) where the food also brilliant.

The pools are brilliant, very clean and safe - the beach is beautiful and sea is warm -

make sure you have the corn on the cob from the beach sellers for lunch and pineapple to finish off - very tasty and very safe.

Beach sellers are, as all Thai are, very polite, nice and friendly and well controlled.

The best jetski's are on the right of the exit of the hotel on the beach, have a blast around the coast its breathtaking.

if you have kids and want a superb place to stay then this is it !

there is some building work next door and i hate noise - no problems, heard it once or twice but it is no bother - the thai build everything using little soft hammers !

  • Liked — The cleaners come in twice a day and even in the evening to make up the put-away bed!
  • Disliked — Nothing !

Hi, I went with my family to Thailand for a holiday this August. We went to Phuket, Koh Samui & Bangkok. At Koh Samui, we stayed at the Imperial Boat House Suite. It was an amazing experience, it was little on the costlier side but I dont regret it a bit. There are 2 pools, one in the shape of a huge boat. The room is in the shape of a boat, with a deck which had these beach/pool beds. You have the living room on the top and you go down stairs to the dressing/study and then the bedroom. Real luxury, very friendly hotel staff. There is a 7 eleven right outside the hotel/walking distance. Overall a great place to be in.

We were worried when we read reviews on here about the building work. Yes it was going on. I'd say we are two fairly easily irritated people, and if it didn't get on our nerves, believe me, it won't get on yours!
The hotel is stunning, the service is great, the food is lovely, the staff are firendly and lovely. How anyone could find an issue with this place is beyond me!
We stayed in a deluxe room, and they decorated it with special pillows, and left champagne and fruit for our honeymoon. Oh - and filled the bath with water and rose petals!
We had a lovely stay here, we ate in the hotel on a few of the nights, the buffets are brilliant, and there was decent entertainment. during dinner. We tended to drink in the hotel bar later on, the barmen are great - especailly Kong who is very friendly and we enjoyed learning Thai from him!
There are other hotel restaurants a short walk along the beach, and we ate there some lunchtimes and evenings. It's relatively quiet (busier than Bophut mind) but you can easily get to Chaweng if you want a night out. We only went once, finding it dirty and noisy in comparison, and we were heading back to Bangkok later, so didn't need a busy town in Samui. Rock Nights is brilliant though if you like rock music.
The hotel staff were helpful, and the tour booking desk were great - we booked a couple of trips out. The boat trip around the island is well worth doing.
The pools are beautiful and the whole hotel is set in lush gardens.
We really cannot praise this place enough. It's perfect!

This was our third stay at the Boathouse. This time for 20 days. The staff were excellent, the Boat we had was comfy and the whole stay bar one small detail a distinct pleasure.

The only issue we had was the breakfast variety was lacking as opposed to other years. This could have been due to the lack of tourists this year. But still very good value.

Except for breakfasts we do not eat in hotels so I can recommend the resturants on Choeng Mon Beach rated as follows:

1.Crystals
2. Chat Keow
3. Samui Honey Cottages

Don't bother with the rest, these 3 are the very very best!

  • Liked — Location and the Boats themselves
  • Disliked — The Breakfast did not have the variety as per our previous stays.
