“Livin' in the 80s!”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

I stayed here in Jan '14 as part of a trip round Thailand with my husband. This Resort has great potential as Cheong Mon Beach is lovely; fine white sand and a gentle drop off into the water; a range of places to eat and drink; and lass commercialision than Chaweng meaning you will not be bombarded by the "you want massage?" tagline so often heard. What lets the Imperial Boat House down is the decor. It was very clean, staff were friendly and incredibly helpful, rooms were big and breakfast was tasty and plentiful, but the place just felt like it was just a bit old and tired. It felt like we were at Kellerman's 25 years after Baby Houseman and Jonny Castle had been there. They are trying to relive the old days when this place was the jewel in the crown, but somewhere along the road, the magic was lost. Like I said, HUGE potential. Time to get the designers in and modernise.

My wife and I have been coming to Koh Samui for over 10 years. We have stayed in several hotels, but this is the second time at the Imperial BoatHouse as it offers a good location. I will explain why?

LOCATION:

Choeng Mon - Great little resort that has not been ruined by developers!!!
Approximatley: 10 restaurants, 5 bars, 3 tailors, 2 pharmacies, 3 car/moped hire places, 2 money exchanges, 2 small supermarkets, several ATM's, night market every wednesday, several small craft shops, and tattooist.
All on one road and that's it, good for a family holiday!
Red/Yellow Taxi - Chaweng / Airport - 400-500 Baht max!
Red Pick-Up Open air Taxi - 100 Baht each to Chaweng

BUT Chaweng has changed dramatically!
Chaweng is a very large town containing hundreds of bars, clubs, strip joints, hotels, restaurants, even a Waitrose, Tesco - Lotus, KFC, McDonalds and Starbucks!
New shopping centre is expensive compared to other shops. Unfortunately when we visited this year (April), the whole place smelt of sewage. This was also commented by other hotel guests that visited Chaweng... But if you looking for night-life, then that's the place to go!

HOTEL:

We booked at the boathouse into a premier room (which we had last time). I got an upgrade to a boat suite for an extra £30 a night (1500 Baht). The suite is bigger, has a large separate lounge, large dressing room and has 3 air conditioning units!! A big positive when the temperatures are 33 - 38C every day with high humidity. Even the locals were saying it was hot, and they hadn't had rain for 3 months!

Staff at the hotel are very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast is fantastic with lots to choose from. The hotel grounds are well maintained and are beautiful with both pools being large, clean and of a great design.
The rooms are very clean and there's plenty of hot water.
But the rooms do need updating, but it's only a very minor point!

Boathouse positives:
Great Location, Very Clean, Comfortable beds, Great Breakfast, Beautiful Grounds, Right on the Beach, Great swimming pools, Friendly / Helpful staff, 10 mins from airport, unique boat suites.

Boathouse negatives:
Slightly outdated rooms, Restaurant food and drinks prices are high compared to outside the hotel.

We love Koh Samui and will return, but Choeng Mon is a great little resort with the Boathouse Hotel being a great choice!

Room Tip: Best Boat Suites: 465, 466, 467. They are by the large pool, get the best sun and closest to the bea...

This was a special holiday to celebrate my 50th birthday. After spending 2 very interesting nights in Bangkok we travelled on to Koh Samui for 12 nights at The Imperial Boathouse. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who offered us a cooling drink and a cold flannel. I knew from that moment that his was going to be something special. We stayed in one of the boat suites and they were amazing, some people have complained that they are tatty but they are original rice barges so gives them character and we loved them. Lots of space, air conditioning and very very clean. The breakfast was the best ever, so much choice and the egg station was fantastic, there was everything you could want, very fresh and a continuous top up of tea/coffee. The staff were the best we've ever come across, so hospitable, always smiling, very attentive. The grounds were beautiful, very lush, almost felt like we were in the middle of a rainforest. We saw and heard so many different animals, it was brilliant. There was always someone tending the gardens and keeping them looking lovely, they work so hard. The pools were clean and the monkey pool was out favourite a bit quieter than the boat pool so perfect for us. The beach was also beautiful with plenty of bars and restaurants not only on the beach but out the front of the hotel. We were spoilt for choice and wanted to return to them all again but ran out of time. A special mention to Charlie Chaplins, The Long Table, Kirati and Honeys. We would definitely recommend this hotel especially the boat suites. We can't wait to return so need to start saving so we can go back ASAP. Thank you for making my 50th the best birthday ever!!!

Just returned from the Imperial Boat House, what can I say what a beautiful location right on top of the beach, hotel was lovely set in green grounds which are excellently cared for, the 2 swimming pools lovely and clean, the boat shaped is used by most and the other for people who like peace and quiet. We were just bed and breakfast and the choice of food was large from continental, English and Thai. If you do not want to eat in the hotel there are plenty if places to eat either on the beach or outside in the town.
I cannot say anything bad about my stay from the hotel staff, to the lady that organises the trips they are all helpful and cannot do enough for you.

Our room was large and clean, we was upgraded on arrival as originally booked a superior room but was given a premier in arrival .

There are plenty of shops in Choeng mon beach and on a Wednesday they have a market selling everything from street food, handbags, clothes and lots more. You can also get transfers from the hotel to Chaweng, or the Fisherman Village at Bophut for more shopping, the hotel will arrange this for you.

I will definitely be going back to this hotel and would recommend it to anyone.

Almost coming to the end of our stay at this hotel have found it to be great! Clean with very polite staff . Thank you! We came half board and have eaten at the Captains table every evening so far good choices and I must say we haven't had every thing on the menus by a long way yet! They do alternative evenings throughout our time and this rings the changes. We had a meal on the beach last night and they couldn't have done more. Very romantic, and great for couples.the hotel is lovely and quiet at night which is good for us, just a short taxi ride for a more lively atmosphere if you prefer. Friday evening is great for the fisher mans market with fab stalls and restaurants! Would recommend a visit.Ground are lush green and we'll looked after. Would recommend and return.

Room Tip: We had the top floor very good would also recommend overlooking the first pool on the right hand sid...

Wow our first time in Thailand and we fell in love with the people and this hotel. All the staff are very friendly and can't do enough to help you. A special mention to Wee on reception who looked after us throughout our stay and Amy who works in the Captains Choice restaurant, he was just a lovely, lovely waiter who we looked forward to seeing every day. Yes some might think the hotel is dated but we thought it was colonial in style and this added to it's charm. The bed was extremely comfortable and although we had a poolside room, no noise disturbed us at night. We were greeted on arrival with a big smile, drink and cold flannels. on being shown to our room we were surprised with a birthday cake for my husband who was celebrating his 50th birthday - thank you to all the staff. During our stay I requested rose petals on our bed for my hubby and was delighted to find the staff not only did this but spelt out Happy Birthday, I love you and did a heart in rose petals. I also ordered my husband a bouquet which was delivered to our room and was beautiful with orchids and roses. The beach is just beautiful and not over crowded, we never had a problem finding sunbeds and the staff were very attentive looking after us for ordering drinks. We attended both the BBQ and Songkran evening on the beach, the food was amazing, lots of choice and flavours. Great attention to detail was taken in the serving of food and drinks, we loved the Captains Choice restaurant and choose to eat there everyday, fantastic food and menu. The grounds of the hotel are very tropical and immaculate, the staff are constantly maintaining the grounds. Breakfast was absolutely yummy and had so much choice, there is something for everyone young and old. The acoustic duo who sang in the Captains Choice restaurant also deserve a mention, on the first night we stayed I requested a personal song - Still The One by Shania Twain for my husband, the duo sang it perfectly and when we saw them again during our stay they remembered us and sang our song every time they saw us, this made our evenings very special and romantic - thank you. We cannot say one negative thing about this hotel and the staff, we are planning our return next year and will be taking our teenagers to experience this magical hotel and can't wait to see the wonderful staff again, especially Wee and Amy. Imperial Boat House Staff thank you so much for a relaxing holiday and the wonderful experience you gave us, see you next April x x

Had a wonderful stay in this hotel, although would not rate as a full 4star, excellent and suited us down to the ground. Some areas need updating but could not fault our lovely rice barge suite which I would highly recommend in beautiful grounds. Could not fault, very clean and 3 air cons so nice and cool. Staff exceptionally friendly and only had breakfast in the hotel as we like to eat out and try different places. Breakfast just as good as many 5star hotels stayed in and suit everyone's needs. Beautiful beach but found too busy with Germans packed like sardines on sun beds and towels reserving their places early in the morning. Loved the quieter monkey pool which was beautiful and not invaded by children. Great just to pick up the phone in the pool area and order your cocktails. Booked car rental at hotel only £20 a day a saw most of the island. Lots of lovely deserted beaches to explore. Recommend Red Baron sunset cruise, very romantic and well organised with excellent food. As cheap to book taxi through hotel as outside. Hotel in a good position and able to walk out onto street with few shops and restaurants. A walk along the beach also has some excellent restaurants especially Salsa Samui. None overpriced. Another good local restaurant is the Longtable, large selection, wonderful fish and cheap.
All in all a lovely holiday and would recommend hotel.

Room Tip: Stay in a rice barge suite, told some of the rooms need upgrading and tired.
