My husband and I went to Cocos on our honeymoon last summer. It was PERFECTION and we've been dreaming about going back ever since. The staff was so nice and attentive, they felt like friends. The food was amazing...and our bungalow was exactly as it looked in the photos, views and all. Cocos was the perfect location as we wanted to avoid the crowds of a large honeymooner resort, but yet didn't want to be entirely alone as in a private villa situation. We enjoyed interacting with other couples and doing some excursions (Xtreme circumnav is a must do!!). The beach is private--nestled up on the Cocos cliff, but you can still walk to other hotels and enjoy their music at night. Overall, we couldn't recommend any place more highly!

Room Tip: We were in bungalow 26-- a bit of a hike up there, but nothing stood between our balcony and the sea! A/C worked fine and we LOVED our outdoor shower.

Cocos is fantastic but it's not perfect so let me start with the things that they could do better. The beach furniture - beds and mattresses - are poor and should be changed. A lot of the mattresses are split, worn, discoloured and stained and a lot of the beds are broken and in a poor state of repair.
When we arrived we were put in room 8 which overlooks the swimming pool but is a bit tucked away - as are rooms 9 and 10. The room is a bit tired and in need of some TLC. In addition, its position means that it lacks natural light and can feel a bit gloomy. The room is overhung with branches which is nice but these sway in the breeze and can be quite noisy at night. I know that is a bit of a "white whine" but still..
The bar and restaurant areas are also a wee bit tired but, actually, my wife and I saw this in a positive way as it adds character and rustic charm to the hotel.
Mid way through our holiday we were lucky enough to be moved to room 17. This is a stunning room - better finished than 8 - and with a view west into the setting sun over the Caribbean. Being able to sit up there at the end of the day watching the sun go down was a real treat and we made sure that we made the most of it.
What that means, in a nutshell, is that you have to choose your room carefully. In my view, no room is a "bad" room but some are certainly better than others.
The all-inclusive is fabulous. The food choices and quality are excellent and we simply didn't have a bad meal. All meals are waiter / waitress service and this is a major improvement on a buffet service.
The bar is great and they serve excellent local beer and rum and all of the internationally known spirits and mixers.
The best thing about Cocos, however, is the people. They are, without doubt, the biggest asset of the place. They are happy, cheerful, helpful, smiling, friendly, chatty and determined to make sure that everyone has a good time. I could name names but, to be honest, that would not serve any purpose as all of the ladies and gents there are terrific.
People return year after year to Cocos and, having now been there ourselves, we can understand why. If we are lucky enough to be able to go back to Antigua some day, we shall go back to Cocos.

A little bit of Paradise was how I over heard a number of Antiguans and visitors refer to this small southern section of Valley Church beach in Antigua and in many ways they are right.

To the north of the beach are the comparatively large resorts of Jolly Harbour and Jolly Beach while Cocos is intimate, friendly and rustic, nestling over the small hill which divides Valley Church and Darkwood Bays.

If you like the size, the noise and the entertainment of Rex or Sandals Resorts this place may not be for you. If you like small, friendly and special places it probably will be. We visited between February 7th and 17th 2014, not having been there since March 2012. We were treated like old friends, with many staff remembering us, a number even remembering our names. During our visit there were a quartet who were on their 14th return visit and a couple who have notched up 18 visits – all consecutive visits and all intending to return, in some cases booking 2015 before they left.

The hotel buildings are traditionally Antiguan, rustic and airy, the bar and the restaurant are open sided allowing the Caribbean breezes to cool you as you enjoy a drink or refreshment.

Guest rooms are cottages with outdoor showers and wide verandahs nearly all of which look over the unbelievably turquoise sea. I suspect by now, most cottages have air conditioning but we preferred to use the ceiling fan to stir the breeze cause by our open verandah doors allowing us to be lulled by the noise of the sea while we slept on a bed protected by a mosquito net canopy.

The food was varied with a good choice of courses for every meal every day, for lunch and dinner there were choices of fish, meat or vegetarian for every course. Because it's the Caribbean the cocktails are constant and varied in the bar, from mid morning until around 6.00 pm a regular supply of cold drinks (alcoholic or not) are available on the beach with tea at 4.00pm.

Looking back at the text above it seems in places a bit like “copy writer's text” but from my wife and my perspective it is really that good.

Saving the best part of the hotel 'til last, I must mention the staff team, they are friendly, courteous, helpful and will go the extra mile to make guests stay as good as possible.

We were asked, in our guest evaluation, to name a member of staff as outstanding, which we found impossible as so many had so much to offer. Shortly after we had completed it I happened to have it in my hand when Andrew the owner stopped to chat with us (he regularly walks around with his dogs chatting to guests). I gave him the completed form (as I'd walked past reception and forgotten to hand it in) apologising that our evaluation was completely uncritical and lacked suggestions for improvement – except, I said, maybe a funicular railway to get us up the hill to our cottage!

In our opinion, the only downside of the hotel is the steep climbs from the beach or the bar and restaurant to the accommodation. We retired from work early and are reasonably fit but if you have a mobility problem it might not be for you. Having said that there were a number of people who I suspect were approaching eighty and were perfectly happy going up and down the hill.

The best rooms in our opinion were those looking directly over the sea, we loved the noise of the sea, other rooms had better views and the sea noise might be less obtrusive, every visitor seemed to have their own preference.

Cocos is very special because of what it is not (Sandals/Rex) as much as for what it is, (rustic, romantic and delightful) we will certainly be going back.

I long overdo in making this review. I visited Coco's last August and had a wonderful time. We had an AC Cabin, (Thank God) but this meant walking to the top of the cliff everyday, sometimes several times a day. We didn't mind because when we got to our room it was well worth it. The staff kept the rooms clean and got us everything we asked for. The views were something I've never seen before. I live in Wisconsin and we're suffering the winter. Thinking back to those amazing views is getting me through. The food was very good too, surprisingly very good. Very romantic, relaxing atmosphere. Impossible to be in a bad mood at this place. I'll never forget this place and the good time that I had there.

Room Tip: Upgrade for a cabin with AC

We visited Coco's in January this year for 10 days. We chose Coco's as we liked the website & liked the idea that it was a small hotel with no children & it had great reviews.
We booked a Superior room which is without A/C. Luckily we had room 19 which had A/C- we would recommend you pay the extra as we needed it. The room was basic & rustic but comfortable & clean & had the most amazing view from the balcony, including the sunset every evening which was a real highlight.
The staff are very friendly & make you feel completely at home. There was around 25% repeat guests during our stay & it was lovely to see how friendly the staff were with these guests, treating them like their friends.
The beaches are all public so there are a lot of vendors selling stuff all the time but all are very polite. Coco's is right at the end of the beach so quite quiet. There's a nice beach bar. Taneesha & Akil would bring round lovely cooling iced drinks virtually hourly. They would remember what you liked too which was a lovely touch. The loungers & brollies are tired looking & a lot are broken but I believe are in the process of being updated. There is a new manager called Andrea who was very approachable & friendly. She is seeing to refurbishments including new toilets by the bar & restaurant area.
Dining is very casual - each day for dinner would be a choice of 3 courses, although only 3 mains- one meat, one fish & one pasta dish usually. We would have liked more variety, especially in the evenings. We were expecting lots of fresh fish each day but this was quite disappointing, especially being by the sea. One day we had salmon which we though was odd & sometimes it was over cooked & not fresh, especially when there is a fish market 10 minutes away..... That was our biggest disappointment. Bernard the chef cooked us a special meal one night & that was much better so more consistency & freshness is possible......
Drinks were all branded, good wines & strong cocktails that would make it impossible to walk back to your room! Special thanks to all the receptionists & waitresses.
Overall a nice peaceful holiday but not quite what we were expecting after the reviews & website.

Room Tip: Room 19 has great views. You need to be on the west facing side of the hotel if you are ok with steep paths & lots of steps but the views will be worth it. Don't pick the rooms over looking the beech/gardens.
