I cannot believe some of the negative reviews on here about Sugar Ridge! We stayed here for 10 days and enjoyed every minute. We deliberately avoided the "one the beach all inclusive" deals and chose this hotel because it was slightly off the beaten track and offered a bed & breakfast option. There are lots of fantastic little restaurants nearby (miracles, sheer rocks, ojs, dennis's) so we were glad we avoided all inclusive, however, we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast each day, a great choice with impeccable friendly service and we did eat at Carmichaels twice - delicious food, great service and a stunning view, and also at Sugar Ridge on their Caribbean night, which was also great. No problems at all! Beautiful room, sparkly clean and serviced every day, fast efficient air conditioning and wifi, huge balcony with that amazing view and a plunge pool which, ok, was chilly, but welcome as a cool down after the walk home up the hill. We were right at the top next to Carmichaels which has a beautiful infinity pool and spectacular views. Yes, the pool is small, but this is not a huge complex-type hotel. Great cocktails and lovely to watch the sun go down. We spent a day here by the pool, great loungers and tapas for lunch. We were the only people there, it was like having our own villa! We walked down the hill each day but will admit to grabbing a buggy ride up to our room on lots of occasions. This was never a problem, certainly never had to wait any more than 5 minutes for a driver. Fresh beach towels from Reception each day and a ride in the hotel's land rover to the beach of your choice, with a pick up time arranged, and he never let us down. Later/earlier pick ups easily sorted with a quick call to the hotel. We also took advantage of Vorn the driver's knowledge of all things Antiguan, and went on one of his nature walks. This is really worth doing, he took us to the local village and we got an insight into real Antiguan life. He knows everyone! The gardens and wildlife are truly spectacular and maintained beautifully, we had a hummingbird which hovered around our balcony and a heron lives in the pond on the ground floor gardens. We visited English Harbour which is well worth doing, fantastically preserved. Lots of beaches to see - Darkwood Beach (I didn't like the beach bar here but the beach itself is stunning), Turners Beach is gorgeous (don't go on a cruise ship day though) and Jolly Beach is beautiful too. Our favourite by far though was Ffryes Beach, with the best beach bar of all, Dennis's. Just a perfect view, great beds and shades, rum punches ("do you want it strong?"!) and a great menu. The spicy prawns are the best I tasted, special mention also for the home made burgers and jerk chicken. The beach is quiet and peaceful and I never tired of watching the family of pelicans diving in and out of the water. Back to the hotel - there's a spa and gym which we didn't use (it was a holiday!!) but we had a look at both and they appeared to be excellent, plus a larger pool and sunbathing area at ground floor which again is immaculate. If you want the all inclusive, large pools and busy bars, buffets, entertainment, children's facilities and "on the beach" then this is not for you, but if you want a gentler experience and fancy exploring the local area, don't mind walking 10 minutes to the beach (jolly beach) - or taking a free ride with the hotel's courtesy jeep to try out different beaches around and about and sampling local restaurants rather than being all-inclusive then this is the answer! Jolly Beach complex has lots of restaurants and bars too and a great supermarket. We were walking down there one night when one of the hotel staff passed us and beeped his horn. We gate him a wave and 2 minutes later he was back, asking where we were off to then insisting he drive us to the Italian restaurant we had in mind as it was a longer walk than we thought. He told us to get the restaurant to call Sugar Ridge when we were finished and someone would collect us! We decided to take him up on the offer (it was further out than we had imagined) - and true to his word he returned for us, dropped us at the hotel and then we transferred into one of the buggies which he drove up the hill for us - just in time for a nightcap at Carmichaels. Such friendly kind people. And, yes, we did tip him, being generous to the staff makes them very happy to please you. A pod coffee machine in the room for delicious morning coffee, small fridge (buy water, beer, wine etc from supermarket at Jolly Harbour) and a safe. Ample storage and well appointed bathroom. Large TV, hairdryer, iron etc. Huge bed with amazingly comfortable pillows and bedding, changed frequently. We have travelled to the Caribbean before and much prefer Antigua to Barbados, for example. It feels real, if that makes sense! If you don't mind a hike choose the rooms as high up as possible for fantastic views, if you have mobility problems then choose the lower rooms, which are lovely too and right in the middle of the lush gardens. Take some mozzie protector, we had a plug in for the room and sprayed before leaving, but still sustained a few bites. A small price to pay for spending time in this fantastic country and wonderful hotel. Can't recommend it enough. We will be back!

Room tip: Higher up for great views but not if you have mobility problems.

We liked Sugar Ridge a lot and would go back. It offered a lot of the things we were looking for. The setting is probably the foremost reason for staying there. It's a great view from almost every location of both the harbor and undeveloped hilltops. The view from the restaurant Carmichals is spectacular. They also have an infinity pool there making it a great spot to catch the sunset and have drinks. My only quibble here is that while the lounge chairs are very stylish they don't adjust making it difficult to read. We liked that in addition to Carmichals and its pool there is also another restaurant/pool combo at the base of the hotel. This restaurant was a nice option when we wanted something a little more casual and less expensive but still wanted to stay on the property. The pool at this location is also very stylish with comfortable loungers and bar service. The adjacent building also houses the spa which was lovely and nicely affordable.

The location is close to the beach. The shuttle to two nearby beaches is worth the trade off to not being directly on the beach. I would prefer there not be a two hour gap between 12:00 and 2:00 when the shuttle doesn't run but that is again just a mere quibble. The shuttle will also run you over to the nearby supermarket which you really can just walk to along with Jolly Harbor. There are a couple of nearby very inexpensive eating options directly across the road from the hotel.

The rooms are modern, chic and comfortable. I can't think of a single complaint here. I think next time I would opt for the higher floor with the better view. Having a plunge pool was cool but our particular balcony was partially obscured by trees near the pool and so it never really got warm enough for my taste. I think this varies and you could get lucky with an unencumbered view. Don't get me wrong. Sitting on the wide balcony in the evening with the plunge pool lit up was still pretty cool.

I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for 16 nights. The facilities were fine, modern and at the upper end. The location is convenient but not on a beach and some of the accommodation is probably too close to a busy road for noise. Tje hillside distribution of room blocks made use of thecourtesy buggies essential but this proved inconsistent with lengthy waits sometimes. The best point was definitely the staff who on the main were friendly and efficient - a minority had attitude and let the place down. The restaurant food was pleasant and well presented but the a la carte menu was static over the 2 weeks and too pricey. Breakfasts were often let down by luke warm items that had dried out either on the buffet or in the kitchen. Charmichaels is a really great spot, well run (in general) and a great place to eat and have a cocktail by the infinity pool. That said it's still too pricey. We enjoyed our stay but found good restaurants elsewhere that were of a similar standard and choice yet cheaper. Overall it's a good place to stay but is let down by some indifferent staff, expensive food and the classic Caribbean lack of attention to detail in some respects - wonky room fittings being a case in point.

This hotel is certainly not a bad place to stay. Reading this review, one may get the impression of a very demanding client, which I am not. With its pricing, this establishment has positionned itself in the highest of brackets, therefor clients should expect the best. Judge for your self. For US $ 750 per night including breakfast, we got the following :
The ROOM : Fantastic view of Jolly Harbour from high up on the hill. The room is relatively small with no space for even one armchair. We had to sit on a chest at the foot of the bed. Problem is the chest was broken. In general, the furniture is worn and was not of the best quality even new. Bedside tables are small and the designer had the great idea of installing large lamps on them . The result is that there is hardly space for a book on them. The bathroom has no bathtub and the footpedal of the basket was broken. AC unit is noisy and it took 15 minutes to find the ceiling fan switch hidden behind one of the large bedside table lamps. The patio ( about the size of the room ) is where the chairs are located. Problem is lots of bugs at cocktail time and not very private to change clothing. Plunge pool is the size of a bathtub. It is COLD because always in the shade. Overall a nice room but certainly not something to remember.
The SERVICE : The room comes with two 500 ml bottles of drinking water for the duration of your stay. To pay over and above this room rate to get drinking water is well... cheap. We ate twice at Carmichael's, the high end restaurant. Expensive but good food , good wine and good service provided by Mr Clifford and his staff. This cannot be said about the Sugar Club, the other restaurant where breakfast is served: The first day we had to wait 30 minutes to get two poached eggs. A glass of water had to be requested and ... never arrived. The next day a glass of milk was brought to the table as we were leaving to sign the bill. Room Service Menu is very limited. Pool towels must be had at the Reception Desk. Not very convenient, especially if you are at the top of the hill pool. I also sat on a lounge chair quite sticky from a cocktail spill. Returning to our room at 17h00 on the second day of our stay, we found lying on the ground by the door the dirty dishes from room service we had ordered the night before, as well as a plastic bag containing trash.
CONCLUSION : None of this was major or enough to make us miserable but at this price, one would expect a much better experience.

My hubby and I stayed here from Boxing Day for 11 nights. The hotel was as described away from the beach and all the suites set on a hill. You do need some fitness if you intend on walking to your rooms. You can of course as for a lift in a golf cart.
The staff here are awesome- so friendly and welcoming. We had great sea views and it is as idyllic as expected. There is a hotel shuttle to local beaches which are great. We didn't get hassled by beach sellers and the food and drink was pretty good.
The hotel hosted a New years party which residents had to pay for... They were also days of preparation which closed the main pool and wasn't really acceptable.
The New year was welcomed with a bang and the pool area even days after had remnants of glass where champagne glasses must have been broken. This was not great for kids or adults alike and who knows if it was in the pool?
New years Day was a bit of a right off for most staff who worked til 3am and then were back to work at 7am! Getting anything on New Years Day was a mission..
These are my main complaints. I think they need to rethink these occasions.
One other major biggy for us; wifi. It worked great in our rooms and balcony but any other hotel area was a right off. Highly frustrating and lets face it we all want to be able to contact our loved ones...This needs addressing.
It is worth every penny though and I loved it!

Room tip: Ask for a room with a sea view..without a plunge pool. Its not needed.
