I'm always dubious having stayed in some well described dives at times, but I have to take my hat off, this is great. This place is beautifull. It is a classic Portuguese building and well transformed in to a modern and comfortable hotel. The superior room was lovely, the bathroom was as new (clean). We didn't get the oportunity of eating here, but the menu looked good. I have it on good authority that this is the place to stay in Viana. All I can do is say thanks for a lovely stay.

Excellent hotel in a beautiful town! The location is perfect, right in town, yet quiet, and close to the train station. Everything about this hotel was perfect, from the beautifully-appointed, comfortable and sqeeky clean rooms to the friendly staff.

Besides having breakfast, we ate dinner in the hotel's restaurant. Our waiter, Nanu, brought us the recipe for the "best asparagus soup ever" from memory as the chef was too busy to write it down. Excellent food, and superior service!

Viana do Castela is a lovely town and definitely worth a stop if one is traveling between Lisbon and Santiago de Compestela.

We stayed in the suites with beautiful contrast of old and new interior. Plenty of wonderful sitting areas throughout the property. Our car was parked without any problem. The hotel is next to the train station and shopping mall. There is a post office across the street and the historical center is only a few blocks away.

We also visited the Pousada at the monte de Santa Luzia (behind the impressive basilica) with its commanding view of the town, the river Lima and the Atlantic ocean. Their dining hall is certainly more picturesque than the one at our hotel, but unless you have a car or willing to ride taxi all the time, Casa Melo Alvim is the better choice albeit more pricey perhaps.

If you are familiar with Relais et Chateaux standard, this property is not their best but will not disappoint.

We stayed 5 nights in July & enjoyed the most friendly & helpful service from all the hotel personnel, who obviously take a great pride in both the hotel & looking after the guests. Add to that a hotel with rooms reflecting various periods/styles of Portuguese decor/furnishings, together with an excellent restaurant and you have a hotel of outstanding charm & comfort.

Although the hotel will be considered by some as expensive, when compared with other Viana Do Castelo hotels, it has one of the best locations for enjoying the town. We came to relax & just enjoy life doing as we pleased. Casa Melo Alvim certainly went out of their way to see that we did just that. We shall be back next year.

We were recently in Portugal, and booked a "splurge" night at the Relais & Chateaux property, Estalagem Melo Alvim, in the little seaside town of Viana de Castelo, an easy drive north of Porto.

As soon as we walked into our room, I said to my husband, "let's book another night!". So we did.

The room itself was huge, at least 12x15 feet (plus the bathroom), with 11 foot walls, plus a domed ceiling. Very beautiful. The whole hotel had a Spanish feel about it, clean white walls, dark wood, cool stone.

The staff treated us like royalty. There was valet parking, truffles on the pillow, bathrobes.

The hotel is also centrally situated, right in the town, easy walking distance to the (delightful) old quarter. I looked at the Pousada in the same town, and decided I did not want to drive up a mountain to my hotel (later, we drove those switch-backs, and I was dead right!)

We didn't eat in the hotel dining room, so can't comment, but the prices seemed reasonable. The hotel price was reasonable too, considering what it was. We paid 155 euros a night, including a very nice breakfast.

This was the best hotel we stayed in on our roundtrip through nothern Portugal. It's a medieval building in the heart of the lovely city of Viana (just next to the train station in case you don't have a car), beautifully restored. There are different room types to choose with furniture of different centuries. We stayed in an amazing room in 'D. Maria style' with a four-poster bed. It was spacious, with all the modern amenities like minibar, tv and very well working aircon. The staff is friendly, helpfull and they really do their best to satisfy the needs of their guests. We also enjoyed one of the best meals of our trip in the hotel restaurant. Their young chef creates portuguese dishes with modern influences. I recommend to book the gourmet package listed on their homepage! All in all a hotel which deserves its 5 stars and with an unbeatable value for the price you pay (E 110 for a double room in our case).
