We decided to stay at this Pousada at short notice and booked directly on line through their web site. This gives the cheapest price that is available and is usually a good deal. It is also worth joining their hotel group reward scheme as this gives you both points and some discounts. The hotel has fantastic views across the river Minho to Spain. Our room was at the back of the hotel with these wonderful views. The room was very comfortable and well appointed with a balcony. The approach to the hotel is quite difficult if you have a wide car, as you drive through the very narrow roads and arches of the fortress. It is essential to follow the Pousada signs as the town has a one way system in place. We eat in the hotel restaurant which was a very good choice. The restaurant protrudes form the hotel and has big windows on three sides so the views are amazing. Even though it was dark outside lights shone all around on both sides of the river. The choice of dishes on the menu was varied and interesting. There is a buffet available at a very reasonable price, we chose some dishes from the main menu and desserts from the buffet. It was easy to mix the two menus. Food was freshly prepared and good. Breakfast was also good. Staff were very pleasant and helpful speaking perfect English. The old fortress town is lovely. The streets are narrow and full of shops selling bedding, table linen and towels all at very cheap prices. In fact at the weekends the town is full of Spaniards who come across the river to shop as the prices are much cheaper than in Spain. It is worth noting that there are very few garages in this area of Portugal to buy petrol, it is much cheaper in Spain so most Portuguese cross the bridge to Spain to buy their petrol. This is a very interesting place to stay and would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful base.
