“Wonderful Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2014

We decided to stay at this Pousada at short notice and booked directly on line through their web site. This gives the cheapest price that is available and is usually a good deal. It is also worth joining their hotel group reward scheme as this gives you both points and some discounts. The hotel has fantastic views across the river Minho to Spain. Our room was at the back of the hotel with these wonderful views. The room was very comfortable and well appointed with a balcony. The approach to the hotel is quite difficult if you have a wide car, as you drive through the very narrow roads and arches of the fortress. It is essential to follow the Pousada signs as the town has a one way system in place. We eat in the hotel restaurant which was a very good choice. The restaurant protrudes form the hotel and has big windows on three sides so the views are amazing. Even though it was dark outside lights shone all around on both sides of the river. The choice of dishes on the menu was varied and interesting. There is a buffet available at a very reasonable price, we chose some dishes from the main menu and desserts from the buffet. It was easy to mix the two menus. Food was freshly prepared and good. Breakfast was also good. Staff were very pleasant and helpful speaking perfect English. The old fortress town is lovely. The streets are narrow and full of shops selling bedding, table linen and towels all at very cheap prices. In fact at the weekends the town is full of Spaniards who come across the river to shop as the prices are much cheaper than in Spain. It is worth noting that there are very few garages in this area of Portugal to buy petrol, it is much cheaper in Spain so most Portuguese cross the bridge to Spain to buy their petrol. This is a very interesting place to stay and would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful base.

Room Tip: At the back overlooking the river Minho.

My wife and I stayed here in October 2013. We found the stay to be incredible. The intriguing drive through the village to the pousada was a great start. The staff were most helpful and engaging. We stayed in room 111 and it was magnificent. The view across the grounds and the river to Spain was breathtaking. The walk across the bridge into Spain was easy and then up to the village of Tui was delightful.

We had dinner and breakfast in the dining room which was excellent.

The village itself is stunning and a great way to spend a lazy day or two just wandering and looking at the goods on offer. There are many lovely spots to sit and have a cold beer and snack.

I could not fault this place. The room was sumptuous, the staff friendly and responsive and the price, considering the luxury was great value

Room Tip: As stated room 111 was fantastic. The view could not be faulted.

Situated in the old fortress overlooking the river and onto Spain you feel you are on top of the world. The hotel is well presented. For a hotel of this standard I would expect wifi in the rooms and not just the public areas. The room was larger than many with a balcony looking toward Spain - an outstanding view. Staying overnight in the old city means you can wander the streets early in the morning before the shopping hordes arrive. Breakfast is very good with cereals and fruits, continental rolls and cheese and some cooked items.

The Pousada is in a walled hill-top town with wonderful views over the Minho river and valley, towards Spain. It's an interested place to get to by car! The route to the Pousada is well sign-posted and we found it first time, but the 4 narrow stone arched gates of the town are a bit hair-raising if you are in a wide car. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and our lovely room on the corner of the 2nd floor had spectacular 240' views. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, instead went to one of the Portuguese cafes in the town. Beware though that the eating places in the town all seem to shut by 6pm. The town of Valenca is quite touristy, with an incredible number of linen shops. Breakfast was good, it seemed better than average for a Pousada.

Lovely setting inside the walled city, with breathtaking views across to Tui from my spacious and stylishly decorated bedroom. I missed a kettle and a small fridge in the room, and had to sit in the lounge to connect to their WiFi, but otherwise was really happy with this fine hotel. Breakfast was superb, but only served from 8am ( that is 9 am Spanish time) - late for pilgrims on their way to Santiago.

Room Tip: Book ahead, as I suspect rates may be more competitive if you do.

I stayed here on a recent visit to Galicia and northern Portugal. The Pousada is set in beautiful surrounding in the old walled citadel with great views from the rooms and restaurant. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the bedroom I had was excellently appointed. Free WiFi in the public area was a plus point but unfortunately not available in the bedrooms.

I booked for dinner. The service was good but my main course of a chicken dish somewhat bland (maybe that is how it should be but I was disappointed). The cheese selection for dessert was very good as was the wine I was recommended.

Breakfast (continental) was enough to start the day.

Last year we stayed across the river in Tui, Spain in an expensive hotel with no view or charm. This time we chose the Pousada implanted inside the Valenca fortress in Portugal, looking back toward Tui. No comparison for its fantastic view. It overlooks the Minho River and Eiffel Bridge, beautifully lit at night, a bit like a horizontal Tour Eiffel. As we were there in December, and the only clients, they gave us their best room with balcony overlooking this breathtaking view. They also gave us a parking space right in front of the hotel. We didn't move the car the 4 days we were there. We took meals in their fine restaurant, and occasionally in bistros within the fortress complexe. The staff was helpful as we have usually found to be the case in Portugal's Pousadas. Ok, ok, you say. What is the downside? As for our trip last year it's the lack of wi-fi in the rooms. With our own "Champagne B&B" in France, staying in touch for reservations is pretty important. So for business I spent a fair amount of time downstairs near the transmitter (and and the bar and TV with international channels). Normally for a hotel of that class I would remove a star because of the poor wi-fi but everything else was so great let's leave the 5 stars and hope that the problem is resolved for next year.
