“Pretty Views!”
Reviewed June 17, 2012

The views of the Minho river and Spain are amazing from this pousada! Plan on spending time to visit the fortress it's located inside. Only drawback - it needs some updating but, no other complaints!

Room Tip: Tip: Use your GPS to navigate your way - Pousada is within a fortress with many one way streets and...

I spent a weekend with my husband at Pousada de Valença. The location is quite magical, inside an old fortress with breathtaking views of river Minho and the spanish frontier lands. The room was not too big but with all the commodities, such as a tv and mini bar. Altough the pousada was refurbished 10 years ago, everything is still in good shape and very confortable. We had the chance to have dinner there and I must say that everything was remarkable and genuine. The service is very nice with a special note for the front desk employee (up to midnight shift) who was clearly above the average.
Despite the that it hasn't a lot of services to offer ( like pool, spa, etc), the fact is that Pousada de Valença is a fantastic place to stay if you are seeking for a relaxing and confortable place with historic and rural surroundings. Ideal for winter weekends with no children.

A cosy little "Pousada" with only 18 rooms (different sizes and different views so you should ask for a room with a view to the Spanish town Tuy, that is at the other side of the Minho river...). Very friendly service, expensive meals (and the room price is also not cheap...), needing anupgrade of the decoration, but with a superb location inside a fortress just looking across the river Minho to Galiza (Spain). Ideal for ladies that want to buy linen and towels!!! Because yet inside the fortress there are a lot of shopping to do...Even if it's full of Spanish (loud!) people...All around Valença there's a lot to visit!!!

Room Tip: Rooms with a view to the Spanish town Tuy

It's not everyday that one drives through a fortress with gates and narrow cobblestoned roads that turn here and there overlooking the countryside of Spain and the north of Portugal in search of a pousada ! Valenca do Minho is just that. Following the brown POUSADA signs, we drove through two big arches/gates with traffic lights ! and made our way through all the shops and town until we reached our destination. Parking was limited and on an angle ( emergency brakes !) but all worthwhile for the comfort in store for us for the next few days. The pousada is rather modern but it has the best address in town overlooking the river and the little Spanish town of Tuy. One of Eifel's bridges is there to walk or drive across for further exploration. Many common areas are available in and outside of the pousada with spectacular views at every conner . Our room was upstairs ( sans elevator !) and very large and roomy with a balcony overlooking the river and the many tourists clamoring below for photos. It was very pretty and peaceful as well as providing a good nights sleep. The bathroom was also very immaculate with plenty of room .The dining area had large windows throughout with a nice selection of breakfast foods as well as lunch and dinner entrees . Staff were very friendly and helpful . However, The town of Valenca in my opinion is overrun with tourists and many shops have gone the route of quantity rather than quality. In that respect, the town was a disappointment as I had expected more of village atmosphere without all the touristy paraphenilia. It was enjoyable to walk the streets for a first timer but it got old after a few days and we wanted to venture to Tuy and the towns in the vicinity. Overall, a good stay and interesting.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the river and Spain for great vistas. Lots of boats and kayaks going down...

Sorry but this place is a disappointment. We could not enter the castle when we arrived, because the Portuguese police did not allow us. Secondly, we got a very dark room with only a little window. Finally service is friendly, however, way too slow. Too expensive for what you get.

Room Tip: ask prior arrival for a room with balcony.

Dear Guest,
We are very sorry for not being able to meet your expectations.
Thank you for sharing your experience and for your feedback on the friendly service and on the price/quality relationship.
We inform that one third of the rooms available at the Pousada have balcony.
The Pousada is set on the highest place of the old fortified area of Valença and has views over Spain, the river Minho and the ancient village walls.
We have taken your comments into consideration and we hope to welcome you again at Pousadas de Portugal for an unforgettable stay,
Kind Regards

The pictures of the pousada de valenca do minho do not do it justice. Standing on the edge of the Fortifications, overlooking the river and the Spanish Town this Pousada built around 1942 is a gem. The rooms are clean and comfortable and ours (101) had a balcony overlooking the river, with spectacular views which could be seen from the bed. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the service good. Add to this the fascination of walking around the town and ramparts and you have a wonderful holiday. Two points to note : The Pousada is located at the opposite end of the town from the entrance (via the old drawbridge) some determination is required to find it, also the main stock of the shops appeared to be linen, bedspreads and tea towels, great if you are looking for these. During the day the town is crowded with tourists but when they have left in the evening you have the town to yourself. All in all a superb Pousada and a memorable and relatively inexpensive 3 days.

I have nothing bad to say about Sao Teotonio. I really can't imagine why anyone would stay anywhere else.
First of all, it is inside the fortress town on the hill in Valenca, tucked away in a tangle of cobble stone streets and picturesque squares. Second, the hotel is beautiful, with insane views of the river and valley, cozy seating areas for cocktails or tea, a spa (which we didn't use), and a large outdoor patio.
Third, the rooms are large and beautiful and romantic. Our room also had a large balcony overlooking the picturesque valley & river (and Spain).
Breakfast was fantastic (and included). The service was a little formal for my liking, but it was excellent.
Oh and did i mention that from the hotel it is a 15 minute walk across the bridge into Spain?
It is basically perfect.
