“Art Deco to the Max”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2014

We sought out this Old World café for its architecture. It was outstanding. Yes, it is a tourist destination, with lots of folks just walking inside to take pictures and leave. And yes, it is a little pricey. But it certainly didn't break the budget to have coffee and a pastry and to just admire the building itself. The service was fine - and people-watching was great.

“Harry Potter was here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2014

Well, at least his author was here and, I guess you could say, he was "born" here. J.K. Rowlings had been living in Porto at the time, marriage to a Portugese man was over, and she would frequent this circa 1923 coffee spot with her babies in their stroller (or so the story goes), while she began the tale of the boy wizard.

As we order our lunch (awesome 11 Euro sandwich and salad, enough for 2), we look around at the dark, beautiful woods everywhere, adorned with imaginatively crafted black iron accents and lighting, it is an easy step to let yourself slip into Harry Potter's world (life on the "other" side of our reality), and look around for mystical gargoyle decorations on the ironwork and fanciful carving on the old wood everywhere in this cafe that probably served as inspiration in these books.

It is a very elegant building, the menu is pricey but excellent. Our tuna sandwich came with a sliced hard boiled egg on top (very nice touch!) The bread was lightly toasted and the entire presentation was in keeping with the cafe's upscale and tasteful atmosphere. They have a website: www.cafemajestic.com just in case anyone is interested.

“Terrible customer service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2014

As world travelers and major foodies we were very excited and went out of our way to visit beautiful landmark cafe, however, by the end of our experience there we were thoroughly disappointed. We started with a beautiful sangria and a bowl of soup. The soup was luke warm and the vegetables were over cooked. We asked for it to be sent back (I can't remember the last time I've done that) and thought that would be the end of it. Unfortunately it showed up on our bill. Of course we asked for the server to take it off seeing as we didn't eat it. She needed to check with her manager and then sent him to our table to bully us over this 5 euro bowl of cold mush. In the end they took it off, but not after trying to make us feel terrible about it. All in all, it is a beautiful historical setting with terrible management. However if this experience doesn't dissuade you, stick to a coffee or the sangria and you should be fine.

“Worth a stop!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

Charming, cute little spot to stop and grab a coffee or tea. It's on the pricey side, but it's perfect to just get a beverage and take in the beauty of the building. Staff is quick, so it makes a great pit stop.

“Very expensive, not worth its price”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

We had breakfast here.
We all took a croissant with jam, orange juice and one of us also took a chocolate cake. The croissants and juices were good, but the cake was too watery.
The waitress wasn't friendly at all, but served us quickly.
The interior is nice, but doesn't make up for the high prices.
