“River Cruise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

A very short cruise highlights the bridges. Probably should have taken the overhead cable car. Raining when we went didn't help.

“Magnificent River with stunning bridges”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

Cutting between Porto & Villa Nova de Gaia, this river is a magnet to visitors. On both sides of the river there's a wealth of places to sit and enjoy the view, watch the water traffic, have a coffee or a meal. Don't miss the opportunity to cross to the gaia side - walk across the beautiful bridge and get the cable car down to the riverside - the views across the red roofs of the port houses and across the river to Porto is stunning. The Taylors port house guided tour is such good value & so interesting (steep climb up to get there, but there are others lower down you could try). If you feel like a good walk on the Porto side you can walk right next to the river to the coast in about 1hr 30 - see the sea, enjoy the local park there. No need to walk back as you can hop on the vintage tram which terminates at the coast for an enjoyable return journey.

Go to Vila Nova de Gaia and then turn to Oporto. The view is stunning. Must see the Port wine cellars.

“The heart of the north of Portugal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

This river that crosses the wine producing d'Ouro Valley as well as the City of Porto is probably one of the most interesting rivers we have had the chance to cruise through.

“How to see the Duoro wine growing region......”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

How to see the wine growing region of the River Douro without paying for a long boat trip with meals you may not want? Simples! Go to Sao Bento station and buy a train return train ticket to Pinhao (goes via Regua but no changes - also half fare for seniors - passport ID needed). An interesting journey with plenty our train window views.
In Pinhao go to the riverside (they call it the Praia) and jump on a boat trip (option of 1h or 2hrs ) which takes you right through the wine growing region with truly beautiful scenery. You see the estates of the Port wine companies you saw in Porto - the crew are local people who work boat trips in summer, then the wine harvest and olive harvest later so they know all there is to know and are happy to tell you and sweeten your trip with a glass of Port.. The restaurant/bars in Pinhao are not overpriced even though you are a captive audience so you can have a complete day out. P.S. The train back leaves from what appears to be the up side of the track but it is a single track so I guess it figures and may terminate at Campanha station but onward connections are available or you can join the Metro to town.. We enjoyed a great day out.
