“Good Value, nice location”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

Great value for a suite with balcony (100€/ corporate rate). Althouht the suite is more a very spacious room, the balcony has lying chairs and it's worthy the price difference.
The hotel is modern, well located near Bessa Stadium and 3 minutes walk from Av. Boavista.
The staff is polite and I would recommend this hotel for business or pleasure.

We stayed at the Bessa from 6-9 September as we were visiting Porto for a conference at the nearby Sheraton Hotel. Pricewise we paid a little less for a Suite here than a standard room would have cost us at the Sheraton (via booking.com) for 3 nights, the benefit being a balcony with sunloungers and a small table with chairs which we thought would be a nice addition. The rack rate advertised in the hotel reception for a Suite is 200 euros per night. Dont pay that - we paid about 325 for the whole stay.

The hotel is located in the region of the same name - literally around the corner from Boavista's football ground. About 15 mins drive from the centre of Porto old town. The area itself is not amazing, lots of graffiti strewn buildings, some derelict, and a high rise of rather scruffy and unappealing looking flats. In the immediate vicinity is a takeaway pizza joint serving reasonable pizzas for about 8 euros. Despite the scruffy area we didnt feel threatened or anything, in fact much of Porto is decorated in graffiti - it seems to be much more socially acceptable over there. Tell you what else is acceptable, tinned mushrooms. If I see another tinned mushroom again it'll be too soon.

Upon checking in it was clear that this is a nice hotel. Looks nice from the outside too. Signature dark marble floors and masculine tones used throughout. Modern bar and lounge on the ground floor with accompanying restaurant and external bi level terrace for drinks and snacks. During the day the drinks are well priced, 1.50 euros for a small Super Bock (local) lager. Friendly service too.

Our room (the Suite) was very nice but not really what I'd call a 'Suite'. To me, a Suite should feature a separate room to the bedroom. This did not. Sure, it was spacious enough, and the bathroom was very nice (with rainshower and upmarket toiletries, towels, bathrobes and slippers) but no separate lounge. This is important to note if you're travelling with children. Thankfully we weren't on this occasion. The balcony was nice, no sort of view at all but nice for sitting out on in the limited time we had spare.

The Suite featured an espresso machine only. It was high quality and the coffee was good, but a lack of kettle and tea in general throughout Porto was a little upsetting for me, a tea-aholic. No biscuits either just this espresso machine and a chocolate on the pillow type affair.

The hotel did feature a gym and some other nice facilities that we weren't able to take use of. Morning breakfast wasn't bad at 9 euros, worth having. Some slightly odd selections in there and no sausages but you get amount of choice for the price you pay. Baked Beans too - take note London!! Lots of pineapple here in salads, with breakfast stir fried with turkey, and in fruit salads where you'd expect.

Portugal however is not renowned for its cuisine. Even in the good hotels like the Sheraton and the Bessa dont provide what I'd call a memorable cuisine sensation.. But then again, working in luxury travel I am a little spoilt. In fact, be careful if you eat in the restaurant at the Bessa at night. Its a lovely restaurant and feels special, but stick to the seafood / pasta dishes. I stupidly fancied a curry and saw it on the menu for 10 euros. Big mistake. Think stir fried chicken and packet sauce. That was literally it, no onions, no spices, just that. An 8 year old could make a better curry.

So there were negatives to our stay but this IS a very nice hotel. I can't give it less than 4 stars on that basis.

Room Tip: Suites are ALL located on the top (6th) floor. Only the Deluxe Suites feature a jacuzzi bath... The...

Being fom Oporto but living elsewhere I have been staying at Bessa Hotel twice a month for the last 4 years when I go to visit my family. I tried many hotels in Porto, but from sometime now I look no further because it is by far the best value for money in town. For me location is not the most important thing because I always drive there, but despite not being in he historic city centre is midway between it and Porto waterfront. I could say that there are lots of bus lines around to take you anywhere but a taxi ride to "Baixa" or to "Foz" costs you 6/8 €. The hotel is new, clean with excellent designed rooms, good beds, nice parking, nice staff, good room service, competent breakfast, friendly staff. I should not write this review because I like it so much and the price is so convenient that more people knowing about will ruin my deal but years of dedicated service deserve that I do it.

The rooms were huge with impeccable modern interior. Wifi is free (although only 2 devices can use it). You pay around 9 euros for breakfast but the selection was varied. The staff were very accommodating and I could honestly say that the service was great, even at the hotel bar.

It is recommended though if you wish to stay in the Boa Vista area and intend to spend most of your time there (Foz do Douro, Molhe etc.) Casa da Musica is within walking distance.

I could say this hotel was perfect apart for the fact that it is quite far from the city center.Nevertheless, cab rides to Aliados and the surrounding areas only cost somewhere between 5-7 euros--not that bad.

Very high service hotel. extremely polite and profissional staff and very competent.

Free fast wifi. Very good room, trendy, modern and very well maintained.facilities.

Quite difficult to park you car.

The area seems very safe.

Breakfast: 9€ (did not try). We booked the room trough the hotel website (only 45€ on a weekday for truly 4 star hotel...).

SPA: The team SPA services were very good.

I was afraid from the reviews, specially concerned about location. Hotel is WELL located. The bus 201 from Downtown ( near Estacao Sao Bento ) takes only 15 minutes. You also have the subway close ( 10 minutes ride ). The Hotel is a truly 4 stars. Fantastic bed, linens, huge bathroom and great service. The also have 4 computer with free internet free for guests. If you like the seaside, the Hotel is located 15 minutes from the beaches ( same bus the other way), where you can walk and then take bus 500 to downtown. I will surely recommend the Hotel for price, location and confort.

Room Tip: Had room 512 facing the street side, the best.

Nice, clean, spacious and friendly hotel with modern amenities! particularly convenient for those with personal means of conveyance. This hotel offers excellent prices on rooms and breakfast, but beware of room service as it could be overpriced. We asked for a flask of hot water and was charged 6 Euros for it! Recommended for couples and business travelers.
