This is a wonderful restaurant tucked away in a hidden alleyway. Okay, maybe not really that hidden as it is still in the (upper) old town of Foz do Douro area, but it is off the main streets of Praca da Liberdade, Rua dos Clerigos and Rua das Carmelitas, etc. and easily overlooked.

But it shouldn't be. This was easily the best restaurant we have dined at during our trip (June 2017; we dined here twice -- once for dinner and once for lunch). Their tapas plates are the best -- the gizzard and tripe dishes are local specialties, and the fried small sardines are most delicious and goes perfect with a glass of sangria or beer. The interior is also tastefully decorated and they seem to have a large wine selection (although we did not have a chance to try those). Their prices, especially those of the tapas plates, are quite reasonable, and the portions are pretty big for tapas.

I would put this restaurant on the top of everyone's list for dining experiences in Porto.

My friend and I walked by earlier in the day and were charmed by the atmosphere and the staff so we talked our two other friends into dinner later that evening. We arrived for a 7:45 pm reservation and did not get our main courses until after 9 pm! We sat down at a communal table and placed our order for the signature dish franchisina - two with fries and two with salads. We ordered appetizers - bread and feta - which arrived reasonably quickly and our first pitcher of sangria - the rose which was bubbly and fruity - and then we waited and waited and waited for our entrees. People who had arrived after us got their food - and we finally flagged down a waiter and he and another waiter came to our table who attempted to explain that the roll of paper in the machine had run out and when the new roll was added our order was dropped! They brought another round of appetizers and then we continued to wait. And then when the orders came they brought mixed veggies not salads so they did knock those off the bill. The meal was fine but the delay and mess up with the order put a damper on the evening. The second sangria was red and too sweet to boot. A shame because it should have been a good experience overall.

Excellent produce, beautifully cooked in stylish setting room with barstools and table dining and Portuguese tiles on the wall. There wasn't a duffer among our choices: cod, cheese, meat and olives.

We had one of the most enjoyable and authentically Portuguese meals of our trip at Celdeireiros. We went for dinner and ordered codfish cakes, fried sardines, tomato rice and game sausage. The sausage, made with rabbit and deer and served with sauteed turnip tops, was one of the richest, most complex flavours we tasted on our trip. The local wines and beers were also excellent. We had a delicious and very filling meal for only about 30 euros.

Great vibe for groups and staff was very helpful. Food is average but if your looking for a bite to eat with good prices and atmosphere come.
