We were guided in our selection by the owner's son, Diago, who spoke excellent English. We had the oven baked cod and veal followed by desert. Delicious food, well prepared and presented with very generous servings. Can see why this restaurant has such positive reviews. Great value for money.

What a nice surprise after trying other more tourist places we tried this restaurant just next to our apartment and were extremely happy with the food and service. The beef filet is probably the best beef I've had and all other dishes were simply excellent. Also the staff very friendly as well as the owner who took the time to talk to us about local customs etc. We highly recommend this little traditional restaurant.

I went to this place invited by a friend who refuses to wave the nouvelle cuisine, and likes to eat in the classic restaurants of Porto, which serve traditional Portuguese food.

O Manuel Alves is a historical institution of Porto, still not discovered by tourists and still loved by locals. This restaurant has been dishing up tasty eats for 50 years.

This family-style and comfortable spot, a regional and traditional cuisine is served, which has in its oven a delicious and attractive surplus value: from goat to veal or from cod to fresh fish, which arrives at the table directly of the heat and still in the traditional baked earthenware. This site is spacious and comfortable, simple style, diligent and friendly service.

To start we tasted Bacalhau no Forno (Codfish in the Oven – Bacalhau, the Portuguese word for Codfish, the country's most delicacy, being even more popular than any fresh fish on the market). A loin, which goes to the oven over a layer of onion and strips of bacon, accompanied by potatoes. Quantity more than generous, product of good quality and correct confection, in the style of the best of the regional culinary tradition. The splinters were consistent but with some resistance to separation. It was not perfect but stayed close.

In the meat chapter the choice was for the Vitela Assada (Roasted Veal), which convinced us, by the simple way and how it is treated. This dish reminded me of the veal made at my parents' home. No adventures, the roasted veal should be made as it was in our homes.

In desserts, the offer is extended and based on the traditional recipe. We tasted the Tarte de Bolacha (Cookie Pie), which is likewise recommended.

The Restaurant Manuel Alves convinced me and I'll be back soon.

Very classy for a reasonable price! The portions are huge enough that two could be fed on one order. My wife had the Cod a la Maison and there had to be 500 grams of fish! Two main courses and wine for well under 30 euros.

This a good restaurant if you are looking for simple, traditional, portuguese food. The place is sometimes crowded, but it is worth waiting for a table. Prices are really reasonable (even cheap if you don't eat much). The quality of the food if good and the ambiance is that of a typical portuguese restaurant. Waiters can seem not very friendly, but that is because they are used to regular local customers, so customers are supposed to already know how things are or work (which will not be the case of you who read this review), but don't worry, only ask then twice for what you want and you will be ok.
