“A fantastic hotel with fantastic staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, the staff were super-friendly from beginning to end and there was nothing that was too much trouble. Our room was great with a small balcony, clean bathroom with powerful shower and huge bed. We found the standards to be extremely high, escpecially for a city centre hotel with reasonable prices. Breakfast was of an excellent standard, with plenty of choice and everything fresh.

The location was a bit of a walk but Porto is fairly spread out and is a city that requires a bit of walking to really make the most of it. We enjoyed the walk to and from the hotel as there was plenty to see and do on the way. There are several cafes and a supermarket very near by to get a drink or bite to eat..
I would definitely reccomend this as a place to stay for anyone going to Porto.

Excellent staff on arrival, friendly and very helpful. The room was clean and above average for a city centre hotel, however we found the bed very hard resulting in back-aches in the morning. Buffet breakfast was very good with a wide choice, the waiting staff were very polite and friendly. Getting an evening drink at the hotel bar was a bit hit and miss as the bar was rarely manned and you often had to go chasing around for staff to get a drink - on a couple of occassions we gave up and walked over the road to a local cafe.
The location was a bit out of the way from the city centre and historic centre with a 15 minute walk down hil to reach both (a killer of a walk back up from the river!). However, public transport is excellent with bus #300 and 602 from down town stopping about 50 metres from the hotel with many more stopping at the end of the road (200meters). Buses 601 and 602 go from the airport to within a 2 minute walk of the hotel and run about every 30 mins, journey takes around 50 mins and costs €1.45. Top tip: Invest in a day pass and free bus route map for the public transport (€3.50) which gets you on all the public transport including the charming old fashioned trams.

Very pleasant stay in this hotel - staff were fantastic and the room excellent. Some small cafes/bistros in the immediate area were well worth a visit (very cheap, friendly and full of locals). Small supermarket right next to the hotel is also handy for buying water etc. The breakfasts in the hotel were great - huge selection of freshly prepared food (both hot and cold). I would have no problem in recommending this hotel to anyone. And of course Porto is a really beautiful city with lots of character.
Some minor negative points: No wireless internet access in the rooms but they do provide cables free of charge (although these seem to available on a first come first served basis). Very steep 20-25 minute climb up from the Duoro river (where all the nightlife is) - not suitable for anyone with a health condition. However the taxis were plentiful and fairly cheap (about 5 euro for that journey). There are no big green areas near the hotel (at least not that I could see).

Really enjoyed the stay at das Artes. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful despite the occassional language barrier (both ways). The room was pleasant and quiet. The hotel was in an odd spot a few blocks from town centre but very near the Soares dos Reis museum around the corner and a few blocks from Clerigos tower. ok connection by tram/bus but a slight hike from the metro (Trindade).

We'd booked for a short break and because of ash had to stay longer. Easy Jet were absolutely useless, completely unhelpful - a real contrast to this hotel, who were helpful, kind and really condiderate. The staff were lovely - without exception - informative condiderate and friendly and they smiled! The rooms were clean and comfortable and well maintained. Showers hot, breakfast fresh and tasty. We really appreciated this lovely hotel, which is conveniently situated. Bus stops just down the road (a 1.45 euro ride to airport - in contrast to taxis at 20plus euros and a horrible ride). Nice restaurants close. Good place - loved it.

This hotel is a good opcion, with walking distance to the old town of porto. very nice decor, with a comteporary design and great paintings. Freindly staff, the girl from the lobby (i wish a remember her name ) very nice and help us with very good restaurant recomendantion. They offer free intenet in the room , but in our room the conextion was at small bedside table with no space only for the table lamp ,so you need to put the computer on that corner of the bed , for us, non sence, because they have small desk. Also if you want to open the mini bar, that is below the desk no body can be seating at the same time, need to stand up and open. For us very uncomfortable. Otherwise was a good option.

Cliched though it is this review has to go something like 'behind an unassuming facade lies a gem of a hotel etc etc'. We booked Das Artes on the basis of earlier Trip Adviser reviews that proved spot on. It was interesting to find that the reception staff were acutely aware of their TA rating and anxious to get to be No 1 in Porto. Our experience is that TA is still not widely known about even by hotels that get good ratings whereas Das Artes seemed acutely aware of the business that positive reports generate. Ours was a room only deal and Los Amazonas exactly opposite the hotel is a clean modern cafe that does a good continental breakfast, drinks, snacks etc. Our room (407) was spacious and quiet and we cannot fault this hotel, we have no connection other than being satisfied customers and TA converts!
