Owner description: Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

There was a free concert on the evening of the Sao Joao Festival which was a great experience. Very good orchestra and nice ambience. People came with their families and the atmosphere was fantastic. We never experiences a free-of-charge concert in a great music hall at such a high quality. Thank you for this experience.

I love "Casa da Música". Never attended na event there but looking forward for it.
Why i love: due to the building itself, it's "out of the box" completely, due to it's appearance and environment in the city of Porto, an ancient city but innovative and open.
And not to mention the restaurant Casa da Música .. that's another review :)

Walked around the building, interesting architecture. Stopped for an al fresco lunch at the restaurant. Very pleasant and the plate of the day reasonable. Free Wi-Fi - lots of coffee drinkers pounding their laptops/tablets. The houses across the way have so much potential but appear abandoned - the area needs some gentrification.

We had read that the rooftop cafe is worth a visit, however note it does not open until 12.30 when the lifts allow access to the 7th floor. We waited and it was worth it. We had intended to have coffee but it was lunchtime so I had a cava and John a white wine. The waitress brought us some little tasters although we were not eating and there was a small charge. Total cost 9 Euros. Lovely up the top there and the menu looked nice.

It is worth going on a tour, which they have at 11 and 4 in english as you get to go through the rabbit-warren of corridors and see the 2 major auditoriums as well as other areas that are used for workshops. The story of he design and the controversy surrounding the building are all interesting.
It is also worth catching a show there as that way you get to hear the acoustics, experience the bar and develop a feeling for Porto's Music centre
