This hotel was okay, but just. My husband described our room as a "cell". The windows were high so there wasn't much light coming in and you couldn't see out. The thing that really bothered us were the signs warning you not to do any laundry in the room or you would be charged 50% of the room rate as a fine. We have traveled all over the world and this is the first time we have ever seen anything like this.

What can I say about this hotel?
On the brilliant side:
The location (near everything and 10 minutes walk from the riverside); charming, helpful, efficient staff ; great terrace (book these rooms) where you can relax on a sun lounger (albeit with other 'terrace room' guests), or sit out at night and watch the stars ; not bland!...mad, retro, quirky lounge and display cases of 20th century ephemera and eclectic vintage furniture in the hallways ; fabulous deco staircase; OK, but repetitive, breakfast...come early if you want any choice!; Free WiFi (often not free in even the top hotels).
On the downside...The rooms badly need refurbishing! Ours was small (but we had use of the terrace), shabby, with cheap basic furniture, terrible lighting, threadbare rug, tiny old fashioned bathroom with a bits missing from the tap, a threadbare towel etc.
If only the rooms were modernised, this place would be a treasure!!!
We had a good deal, a great time and it wasn't expensive, but I would only recommend it if you don't need luxury in your room.

Room Tip: Terrace rooms are probably smaller, but access to the terrace is worth it.

very old-fashioned hotel. Furniture in the rooms very outdated, Carpets were threadbare. We had a room at the back with small windows, perhaps for the best since the view from these windows was appalling. But it was clean. Limited breakfast-buffet.

This hotel have a great location, near by everything metro station, aliados, churches. Very helpful staff, the rooms are big and charming, its a old hotel! The breakfast room is too small, not comfortable..

I have been using this residencia/hotel since 1984. I have always found it to be good value. I have recently been stopping in the terrace rooms. They are a bit on the small side, but you do have access to the terrace (which other guests do not). Staff are very friendly, especially Dave (who used to be steward on Ryanair). It is centrally situated very near Aliados metro station. Talking of Metro - Top Tip coming up.........If you arrive by air and plan to use the Metro for a couple of days get a 3 day ticket (€15) at the info desk in the main airport concourse. This saves trying to sort out a single journey ticket on the over complex Andante ticket machines and gives you freedom of metro, buses and funicicular rail and is 1st rate value.
Couple of criticisms......breakfast could do with a bit more variety and the coffee is not as good as it used to be.
Above the hotel Sagres de Infante (I think that is what it's called) and turn left there is Cafe/bar Aviz. Does good basic grub and has an English menu should you want one. Most of the staff speak English but really appreciate you trying a bit of Portuguese.
About 5 mins from Hotel. Nearby is Cafe Guaranay - great for a more formal dining experience.

My wife and I stayed there during the St Johns Festival in June 2011. I found they had rooms on the 6th floor with a terrace overlooking Porto, we stayed there for 3 weeks, it was without a dought the best we could have booked, very reasonable, loverly quite breakfast, David, on reception was brill, free wifi, was tempted to book the Prestani, pleased i did not. You must go to Porto, buy a hammer ( plastic 3 euros ) and hit everybody over the head with it. great fun.

Room Tip: Book the terrace rooms
