We chose this hotel as it is just across the train station and had a reasonable price. As historical center is not big, it is wise to stay close to the station if you are traveling with train so that you can easily reach the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable. The lady in the reception was kind and had fluent English. Breakfast buffet was very good.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front are more expensive but choose them if you want a good view.

The hotel is old and could use a facelift, but we found it to be enjoyable and clean. The location is perfect for exploring the city. The staff was helpful. The breakfast was good - make sure you try the fresh squeezed orange juice. I would recommend it to others.

I took my boyfriend for a suprise birthday trip to Oporto and thought that the choice of hotel would be its weakest point. However, finally we were satisfied.
Our room (suite on the 4th floor) had a nice olde-worlde feel with antique furniture (without view), everything was clean, bathroom had a shower, a bathtub, a sink and a bidet. A nice surprise was a fully functioning jacuzzi! I have no idea what is the quality of rooms on lower floors (not very high according to some reviews) but the rooms on the 4th floor are all quite nice (I peeped into them).
Breakfast was continental (nothing cooked, and to be honest nothing special), but satisfactory.
There is a lovely mosaique in the entrance corridor on the ground floor.
The biggest advantage of this hotel is its excellent location, right in the middle of the historic centre.

A very central hotel and although it is old fashioned, that is part of its charm. We had a spacious front facing room on the 4th. floor which had a street view towards the station. The furniture is all old but in keeping with the character of the hotel.
All of the reception staff were very friendly and attentive and were always there to give directions and advice when needed.
Breakfast although adequate was the same every day so a little monotonous for 7 days.
Everywhere was within walking distance from the hotel and the train station and metro was right ouside the door.

Room Tip: From room 429 I was able to pickup free wi-fi from the station the down side though is the steet noi...

I was given a single room which wasn't very attractive. Very small window, no view and very dark. The floor of the bathroom was covered in water. I reported this to reception when I went out and when I returned I was given a large room for 3 people. The room was spacious and very cold. There was no central heating. There was a little electric heater which I kept on until I left the following morning but it had its work cut out providing enough heat.

I tried to have a shower in the tiny space provided. The shower curtain immediately clung to me as there wasn't enough room for the both of us. The water became very hot and I couldn't adjust it to any degree. I peeled off the shower curtain, turned down the flow of water so as not to cover the room in water and attempted to wash. It was extremely difficult. I noticed there was a cord hanging from the ceiling eith a sign saying 'Alarm', so maybe they are expecting guests to need rescuing from this dangerous shower. In spite of my best efforts, I was scalded by the boiling water and the floor got soaked.

I liked the public rooms in the hotel although they were pretty dark. It's a shame that the hotel has not been renovated to provide more light, central heating and modern bathrooms.

When I travel to Portugal one of the cities that is a must for me is Oporto with its magic and warmth. This time (June 2012) I made the reservation at the Hotel Peninsular, centre town.
An old Hotel with charm and very well kept, polite reception staff and quite clean. The room was clean and comfortable and a modern bathroom (even supplied with new disposable toothbrushes...never seen this before). The best of all was the daily rate of 48.00 euros/night, which is a great rate if you are not looking for a 5 star Hotel. Everything worthwhile. Oporto is the best as far as restaurants and shopping is concerned and not at all expensive for the tourist.

We stayed in Peninsular for 5 nights and have a terrible expiriance. Those who are not interesting for the location let stay out of this hostel, because location is the only good thing. Everything else is like the time has stopped 50 years ago. Especially pay attention of the rooms without the window or rooms facing the grey wall. Furniture is so old like it is from middle age and the bathroom door can not be closed. Smell on the lobby is like sprayed with insecticide. Staff so so, some a little bit helpfull but others very nervous and rude. They charged every local call, example they have charged us 0.30 cents for taxi call. Breakfast is ok, but every morning is the same. And to resume, stay out of this place.
