I had totally different experiences for my two meals here in early October. The first one was positive, but the second was negative because of an inconsiderate fellow customer.

The name of the restaurant is an original one. I think that it translates into English as "mosaic of flavours." They serve a tasty board of goat and sheep cheeses. A more unusual aspect of the menu is that they serve cans of sardines, unusual given that freshness is often a sign of good food. Is this a Portuguese idea? I also enjoyed a glass of Douro red wine for €2.50.

The first occasion that I ate here was my very first evening in Portugal for 14 years. The waitress was very helpful in answering my questions about the city. Yes, I forgot to ask about the canned sardines!

I ate at one of the tables outside the restaurant again two evenings later. A fellow tourist on the next table blew her cigarette smoke over me totally unprovoked (if one can provoke someone into doing that). I have an allergy to smoke, but when I pointed that out to her other customers gave me such a dirty look. Surely, non-smokers have rights too?

What a hidden gem Mosaico de Sabores is! A most definite must see, it's so easy to want to buy almost everything in sight. They've got a great selection of specialty foods and most especially locally based products, its perfect for a one stop shopping spree for items to take back home. We had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners Francisco. He was super attentive and eager to share Porto's history and food/wine culture. We ended up visiting the shop several times throughout our stay to buy a variety of local wines, beer, cheese, artisanal breads and spreads.

One day he graciously served up a Port tasting and shared so much interesting info on the process and different types. We were prepared for our Port cave wine tastings to follow after spending time with Francisco. Then on another day we were able to taste Sovina, the Porto craft beer. This beer was so much better than any of the mainstream beers in Portugal. Their entire selection of beer was SO good! If only there was a way for it to get shipped to the states!

Francisco was also so helpful to bring in special port for me to bring back to my husband. He went out of his way to get a special order of wines and I ended up to purchase more wines each day. I would have bought more if I wasn't limited to baggage space and costs!

We also got a variety of spreads, cheeses and the local bread that they get in from a neighboring town on a weekly basis. Their product selection is extensive and everyone that worked there during our visits were really friendly and happy to help us find whatever we needed and even more! I would definitely come back and hope that everyone has a chance to visit them as well!
