“lovely cozy hostel and great hospitality”
Reviewed December 20, 2013

I stayed in Alma hostel for 2 week and enjoy it very much. The room was cozy, clean and with a beautifull view. I loved breakfast served every morning. The hostel is in good location just 8 minutes walk to centre of Porto. Thank you to owners Armando and Guilherme for my stay. They are nice, polite and have great sense of humour. They told me a lot about Porto and advised me about places to visit. You made my stay very enjoyable.

I've been 5 days in this great hostel. Starting to the kindness and emphaty of the two Caldas brothers (Guilherme and Armando) and Ana (receptionist) , passing for the general cleaness and friendly environment and finishing to the excellent position, in Rua do Bonfim: you can start walking from this street and you'll join the city centre in less than 10 minutes. I cannot forget also the behaviour of his owners, really helpful and kind when I asked to them the laundry service and also when I needed any advices and suggestions about the historical places and nightlife ot town. Very close to the hostel there's a full range of great and economical restaurants, churrasquerias and pastelarias.

The breakfast's choice is wide and genuine and they put also daily bread ham and cheese so you can prepare your lunch too! :-) There's also a nice library and a very good common space with tv, instruments, sofas... in a few words, I believe I couldn't find a better solution for my trip!!

Multo Obrigado!

Ri

Reviewing hostels is always difficult because you sign up for difficulties when you volunteer to stay in a room with other people. But that being said, it is worth noting a few things about this new property in Porto.
Pluses:
-Friendly staff, helpful when they need to be or when asked or when present
-Nicely decorated common spaces and dorm rooms
-Hot rolls in the morning add to the otherwise bland hostel breakfast scene
-Short walk to metro (24 de agosto) and Campanha train station
-Small hostel (maybe 20 beds total)
-Good value
-kitchen you can use easily

Negatives:
-Super noisy street below which can lead to some difficult nights
-2 single use bathrooms in the whole place (our few nights here has been really difficult with 5 girls)
-Bathrooms are not exactly well maintained (mildew, mold) because it is a very old property
-Staff is not very present usually (they do leave a phone number always) but it can be difficult to have questions answered about Porto; you should not rely on them for tourist info
-15-20 minute walk from centre or Aliados (nightlife); can't easily walk to water
-Although the decorations are really nice, the building could use a few updates to faucets and the like

Overall, this hostel is a solid bet. It it relatively clean, but it is not sterile clean like other mega hostels. It has a bit more character than that.

Eilla,

We want to thank you for your review. We will take your criticism and compliments as well, to improve our service.
We congratulate ourselves with the recognition of our character, decor and some facilities. In our way to see it, it is the only way for a place from the XIXth century. A place that needs in fact constantly manteinance from us, and proper respect and care from our guests.
As a staff we try and we are available all the time even if we are not permanently at the reception. We are also a very small and familiar business, and it's been just 2 of us almost all the time to deal with it. Thats why you can find us cleaning or do something else instead of being at the reception. We also try to help our guests in every possible way upon request. We are at everyones disposal, just as mentioned at the check in when we do the tour around the house with all our guests.
For the cleanings we can assure you, we only use professional and certified products even the liquid hand soaps, and all this to allow the best hygiene and cleanliness in a traditional atmosphere.
We are also open for any suggestions to improve our breakfast, that is made according our traditional way and allowing you to have a buffet with multiple choices such as fruit, orange juice, a few tea flavours, milk, chocolat, cereals, coffe, 2 different kinds of bread, a few jam flavours, butter, cheese, and ham.
To finish, we want to strengthening the opportunity of take your comments as a serious help and would like to invite you to visit us again in the near future in order to witness our improvements.

The management.

Backpacking solo through Portugal, I stayed in Alma Porto Hostel for two nights in early December.

POSITIVES:

Really friendly staff. They hosted an indie band on my first night and served drinks and food too. Cool.

Breakfast is free in the morning, and it's fairly good.

Located in a really cool old building, with a really nice backyard area.

Good common area. Met other travelers here. Wifi worked well too.

Good value for the money.

NEGATIVES:

Only two bathrooms in the whole property - could become a bit of a logjam in high season.

Stairs do not bother me, but getting from reception to the top floor dorm is a climb for those that might have mobility issues.

Our dorm room was quite cold at night in December. I don't think the building is insulated or heated. I didn't need to ask for more blankets, but still - it was pretty cold at the time.

Requires a bit of a walk to the historic part of town (but there's a metro station quite nearby that helps with this!).

NOTE: This property was VERY new when I visited, so I expect things will only get better and better here. If you're thinking about staying here, give it a try!

We went to the Alma Porto hostel because friends told us about this hostel.
The hostel itself has everything you need and we needed only a bed, a shower and a plce for our backpacks.
Breakfast was also availeble the and so we had really a very nice stay there.
We slept in a commen sleeping room but on this time there were no one else there and so we had the hole room for ourselfs.
If you wanna tray a hostel in Porto, who is not so known by the travlers like some outhers, check out theseone and <i think you won´t be dissepointed.
