My boyfriend and I visited Porto for three days and stayed at Hotel Malaposta based on reviews here on tripadvisor. Our experience was very disappointing and not the relaxing stay we had anticipated.
To start off with we arrived at the hotel after travelling from Lisbon and the receptionist asked to see my passport which was packed away in our huge suitcase. Instead of allowing us into the room first to bring down the passport later (as is normally considered good customer service) I had to open up and empty out my suitcase in the reception area.
Secondly we were rather rudely awoken at 5am in the morning by drilling into the wall of our room from outside. The drilling continued for several hours and grew to such a level I thought they were going to come through the wall beside our heads. After several calls to reception they agreed to move us rooms to the top floor, which meant packing up our suitcase again and there was no offer of help to move it to the other floor. Very exhausted we went back to sleep and lost a morning of exploring Porto.
Finally on the last evening, before going to bed, I found the water coming out the shower was lukewarm so decided to wait until the following morning to shower. In the morning the water was ice cold. Only upon once again calling to reception did we discover there was 'a problem with the water'.
As we checked out I was charged 1 euro for a bottle of water I had - the cherry on the cake of terrible customer service.
Our romantic getaway was blighted by drilling, rude staff and ice cold water. Porto itself is a spectacular city to visit, so I'd highly recommend looking for somewhere to stay that isn't Hotel Malaposta.
The location is probably the only good thing about this hotel.
