“Almost ruined our holiday”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2012

My boyfriend and I visited Porto for three days and stayed at Hotel Malaposta based on reviews here on tripadvisor. Our experience was very disappointing and not the relaxing stay we had anticipated.
To start off with we arrived at the hotel after travelling from Lisbon and the receptionist asked to see my passport which was packed away in our huge suitcase. Instead of allowing us into the room first to bring down the passport later (as is normally considered good customer service) I had to open up and empty out my suitcase in the reception area.
Secondly we were rather rudely awoken at 5am in the morning by drilling into the wall of our room from outside. The drilling continued for several hours and grew to such a level I thought they were going to come through the wall beside our heads. After several calls to reception they agreed to move us rooms to the top floor, which meant packing up our suitcase again and there was no offer of help to move it to the other floor. Very exhausted we went back to sleep and lost a morning of exploring Porto.
Finally on the last evening, before going to bed, I found the water coming out the shower was lukewarm so decided to wait until the following morning to shower. In the morning the water was ice cold. Only upon once again calling to reception did we discover there was 'a problem with the water'.
As we checked out I was charged 1 euro for a bottle of water I had - the cherry on the cake of terrible customer service.
Our romantic getaway was blighted by drilling, rude staff and ice cold water. Porto itself is a spectacular city to visit, so I'd highly recommend looking for somewhere to stay that isn't Hotel Malaposta.

The location is probably the only good thing about this hotel.

First of all thank you for your comment. Regarding the passport, we hope you understand that the Portuguese law, represented by SEF (Foreigners and Borders Service) requires that all guests are required to show an identification (passport or ID) when checking in a hotel, even the Portuguese, so you could not go to your room without this verification.

The noise was an external factor to the hotel that we couldn’t control, but when we were informed of the situation you were transferred to another room. We even asked the workers to try to reduce the noise. You can not help with the bags because at the time there was only a receptionist, and she could not leave her post and leave the front desk empty.

Unfortunately the boiler water broke around 11pm and despite several attempts it was only possible to resolve it in the next morning. This is entirely our responsibility and we understand that after the noise there was no patience.

For the water, we can only say that there was a requested for a bottle of water at the front desk and as tabulated in the information provided, the amount was duly charged.

As you said at the beginning, normally the experiences in our hotel are positive and your experience was anomalous, it was the combination of legal obligations (passport) and situations which normally do not occur (noise and water) .

Recently renovated in 2011 to a high standard, the Malaposta hotel is close to major sights within the Old town area. Its location is about a 8 minute walk to Trindade station, which is conveniently linked on the Purple line E to the airport; the area is well endowed with nearby restaurants, shops and bars.
The room was very clean, the double bed was firm and comfortable, and the air condition and heating worked well. The quality of the breakfast was very good, service all round was of a high standard and friendly. Stayed 3 nights, the 2 Marias at Reception were very helpful and competent, and that made me feel welcomed. A recommended hotel, I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Cleanliness, bed quality, close proximity to all amenities, service quality, price

The location is just a few blocks away from the main square in Porto. The city is small and you can see walk around to pretty much everywhere.
The staff at the hotel were very friendly (just like everyone I had contact with in Porto). It's a small hotel but clean and comfortable.
I totally recommend this Hotel, and if I go back, will definitely stay there again.
