Grande Hotel de Paris

I really liked this hotel, was really quaintly decorated, very old worldly. We were offered the choice of two rooms, we took the larger one with a refurbished bathroom on the second floor. The location was good, slightly tricky to find at first but close to all the sights & attractions Porto has to offer. Breakfast was very good. Our only negative was the noisy revellers outside the hotel on a Saturday night

The hotel is less than a 5 minute walk from metro (Aliados or Sao Bento) so easily accessible to mainline train stations and the airport. Porto is quite hilly (not as bad as Lisbon) though so beware if lugging big suitcases.
The hotel is located down a quiet street and as mentioned in other reviews it is in an old building. It has been decorated with various objects from the past and is in-keeping with the age of the building. As with old buildings there is some wear and tear but the public areas of the hotel are well kept and clean. There is a lift to reach the higher floors but it is quite old and an experience in itself!
Staff are polite and efficient, not over the top friendly but they get the job done and we had no complaints.
Our room was on the first floor. It was a reasonable size and with a decent size bathroom which included a bath which was good for relaxing after walking around the city. As it's an old hotel there is a bit of a musty smell, especially in the bathroom but we didn't find it bad enough to put us off staying there. The bed was comfortable and there was a TV with some English news channels.
Breakfast was a brilliant self service affair with a good selection of pastries, cakes, cereal, ham, cheese etc. The waiter was also polite and smiling every morning, and was the friendliest member of staff we met during our stay!
There are a lot of cafes within a couple of minutes walk and even a McDonalds near Sao Bento station. We did struggle to find 'typical' restaurants though but the impression we got in Porto is that people tend to just eat in the cafe style places.
The only downside for us was that as it is an old building it is quite loud, especially at the weekend when guests are coming in late and walking around. As we were only staying for 2 nights and used it purely as a base to explore Porto this wasn't a problem for us but it could be for others as we didn’t get a full night’s sleep on either night.
Overall if you want something charming and in-keeping with the romantic and historical feel of Porto then this is a good choice as it is not overly expensive and is in a good location. Due to the noise levels at night though, and the fact that Porto is a small city with everything mostly within walking distance if you are looking for somewhere to have a totally uninterrupted night's sleep then maybe look at a more modern hotel. We would stay again as the breakfast, location and charm of the hotel was enough for us!

Thank you for choosing our hotel and for your review. We are located in the heart of the city, so you have a lot of places to visit but some nights there is some noise in the streets.

We are very proud of our “museum” and tasty breakfast, so thank you for your words. Hope to receive you next time with a bigger smile!

the hotel looks beautiful in pictures on the internet but its entrance is in an alleyway like street
the interior of the hotel is beautiful although strange decorations like old toiletseats on the wall, rooms small but very noisy due to weekend partygoers at night, no fridge/minibar,breakfast good, internet connection very poor and first day not working at all
but the worst thing was the first night, i went to the bathroom and saw the whole sinktable was infested
with ants ( mind you last january ) next morning i made a complaint to the reception and with no
excuse what so ever been made, the reception staff said they couldnt do anything about it because it was weekend and exterminationservices could only come on monday, also they could not provide other room, but they sent up the house keeping to solve the problem but during the next day ants where there in the bathroom as well but now also in the hotelroom itself
okay ants it can happen, but the attitude of the staff at the reception was very indifferently,
no excuse was made none compensation was offered and nothing was done about it
later i spoke to some other guests in the breakfast room and they had have the same ant problem

I really liked this hotel...it seemed as if I were traveling in another era. It was very charming and pretty. The rooms are pretty basic but spacious and very clean. Sometimes in older buildings the plumbing is not great but this was perfect...the shower was nice and hot and the door sealed up well leaving no water on the floor. We stayed three nights and had a room facing the street....I was concerned that it would be loud with street noise but with the shutters closed, blocking out light and noise, we slept well all three nights that we were there. I think it is a great value. The breakfast is not extravagant but offers plenty of tasty choices. The staff were not unfriendly but nor were they very warm but they were professional and courteous. The location was great...just a couple of minutes walk from the metro and very close (less than 5 minute walk) to San Bento train station...we walked everywhere in town from the hotel. I would stay again if in Porto. There is a nice wine shop across the street with fun and informative wine tastings.

A nice hotel in the very center of Porto (about 7-minute walk to the metro, 15 minute car ride from Campanha railway station and even less - from Sao Bento station, walking distance to all of the main sites), every single corner of which calls for taking pictures - every single artifact here is chosen with taste and love. Rather spacey rooms with comfortable beds (only TV seems out of place) and nice light bathrooms. Great breakfasts with very a good choice. Very nice and helpful staff speaking really good English. And all this for a quite moderate price. Would probably stay here again if I return to Porto.

If you want a nice place to stay in the center of Porto, this is the place.
Nice rooms, strange but unusual decorations throughout the hotel.
And for a short city trip you can start with an excellent buffet breakfast!

Room Tip: Try a room a the back, less noisy.

I stayed three only nights and I wished I could of stayed longer as there really is so much to see and do in Porto and there is no better place to stay and enjoy the Porto experience than this Hotel.

The hotel itself is very old, it is a museum with a wonderful olde world charm,i loved the old lift, along with veyr pleasant and helpful staff.

Breakfast is the best I have had, even when I have been away on business and stayed in 5 star hotels, their breakfast here out shines them all.

Plus they have a wonderful morning waiter, who glides around and makes sure we are all having what we need, what a top professional person he is and a valuable asset to this hotel.

My room was wonderful, i just enjoyed every moment i was there, it is also right in the heart of the city.

My advice don't miss out, be part of the experience and stay in this Hotel.

Room Tip: I had a room on the top floor with a view.
