“Cheapest scenic ride ever”

Funicular dos Guindais

A great way to transfer from the Ribeira, located just above the waters of river Douro, to the upper part of Porto city centre. It has the brilliant advantage of being inserted in the metropolitan transport area, so if you wishh you can take this Funicular and then catch the metro (whithin one hour time) with the same ticket and no extra cost. The ride is short but very beautiful and the view is not to be missed.

This is a very handy attraction in Porto... When coming back from Ribeira to city centre it can save climbing quite a steep hill up. The views from the short ride are only accessible from here, so it is perfectly worth a ride even for visitors. Highly recommended at sunset/dusk time!

Love this funicular- serves the purpose of saving your legs from clambering up & down the steepest hill up from Ribeira. But it's great fun just to ride! Art exhibition on upstairs too.
Make sure you buy your Andante travel card at airport, then the funicular is free!

This is not only a great viewing platform but is also the best way for the footsore to get to the bottom of the hill! The ride down is over a short distance but the view is spectacular. There is a moment when you teeter on the edge like on a rollercoaster ride and feel you are going to tip over into a white knuckle vertical drop. There were some sharp intakes of breath including mine but while the descent is very steep the cab remains thankfully upright.
On the down side, we really struggled to find the start of the funicular as after the initial signs advertising it, there were no further signs or directions as to how to get to it. We wasted quite a bit of time searching and in fact gave up the first time and almost found it by accident the following day. Frustrating!
