We thought twice about paying the 3 euro to visit the cloister but were glad we did. Wonderful tile decorations, those on the terrace and in the chapter house depicting 18th century country sports. And don't miss the girls on the ceiling.

In Porto, there are several religious institutions where they are serious about closing for lunchtime from 12:30 to 2 - the Cathedral is one of them. This meant for us that in the middle of enjoying the glorious blue azulejo tiling covering the walls of the cloisters, around 10 minutes after 12, we were told the church was closing. And little by little they herded everyone out so that the church could close at 12:30.

That idiosyncrasy aside, if you are a fan of that characteristic blue tile, as we are, you don't want to miss the cloister, or the cathedral as a whole. They are stunning! And you also want to avoid the middle of the day, because they definitely close exactly at 12:30, and they will not let you into the cloisters if you show up at, say, 12:20.

Lovely old historic building and very well worth a visit. The interior is fairly typical of type but cool and restful. We went upstairs onto the upper cloisters and enjoyed the views. Overall a good part of the Porto experience.

The cathedral sits atop a hill that provides great views over the city of Porto. However, as cathedrals go, you'll be disappointed if you've been to the great ones in other cities. If you're nearby, see it, but don't make a special trip.

Beautiful cathedral, and great views overlooking Porto when outside.

The public were allowed to visit the cathedral when a wedding was on, which was both fascinating and lovely.
