“A lovely gem”

Religious displays from the period are good and gory - this has lovely ones! The woodwork is really exquisite. Well worth a visit

“adding to the chorus of admiration”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

An unparalleled example of the work of the famed medieval Guild of Porto woodcarvers. There are signs that all the interior was once covered in gold-leaf so that it must have been like a glittering vision of Heaven. According to an informant who knows this city, and Portuguese history, inside out, many of the adjoining house interiors were similarly decorated, but of those remaining the carvings have been stripped, defaced or vandalised. Old Porto is a very pretty museum but the soul has long gone out of it and like many other beautiful places it exists now mostly on the fickle tourist trade..

“Unbelievable small church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

Walking O Porto you might even miss the entrance to Santa Clara. Dont. It is probably one of the most beautiful interiors of all the churches in the city.

“Hidden tresure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

The church is hard to notice, as it stands behind other buildings. Only a small arch through a wall makes it accessible, showing a simple and low-profile outside. As you go in, the intrincate wood work with golden ornaments quickly reminds you of S. Francisco church downtown, but maybe because Santa Clara is smaller, the decoration looks heavier, and because there are less tourists, the lack of movement and noise makes it way more solemn.

“Wooden Old Church”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013

Fine-decorated wooden old church which smelled like ancient temples which we visited a lot in China.
