As a European cultural institution serving the national community, the Serralves Foundation’s mission is to raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment. Well worth a visit, most beautiful gardens. I spent my first afternoon in Porto visiting the Garden as it was just 20min walk from my hotel. I like photography and the camera certainly loved these gardens

Great to visit on a Sunday morning, when it's free. I do love Claues Oldenberg giant sculptures though. The park is wonderful and quiet as well.

Modern art & gardens are two of our major passions & we travel many miles to see them. Having read other reviews we had high expectations of Serralves. We came away very disappointed both with the galleries & the surroundings.

Though the main gallery & original ‘art deco’ house normally contain temporary & frequently changing exhibitions, both were currently exhibiting works from their permanent collection. Frankly, there was almost nothing we could see which was of real value. Only the small Architecture exhibition in the library mezzanine excited us.

The main gallery was large, white & minimalist: but very confusingly laid out. The pink art deco ‘Casa de Serralves’ took 19 years to build, we’re told. Up close it is just rather large & characterless. I’m not surprised the family only lived there about 13 years.

The gardens are certainly green & extensive, but again do not contain very much. Certainly the outdoor artworks were negligible in impact. In fact we walked past several before noticing them. We were – I feel unnecessarily - excluded from a sizable area around the tea house, by tapes & guards, as there was a practise for the open air ‘Jazz in the Park’ concert later.

Compared, say, to the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, or even the small Museu Amadeo de Souza- Cardoso in nearby Amarante, Serralves is currently very poor.

We first wisited park and found it amazing. You have all kind of surroundings, plant, lake etc. Park is very large, takes hours to explore the whole area.
After couple of hours wandering we visited museum and were a little dissapointed. Maeby the exhibitions at that time weren't to our taste. Note that exhibitons variate from time to time. Our favorite was Amalia Picas work of acrylic shapes with occasional performance.
Tip: good and fresh luncbuffet upstairs restaurant :)

This museum and park is a beautiful hideaway in a place you'll never expect. The museum is modern and truly captivates the essence of the gardens surrounding it.
