Owner description: Located in the heart of Oporto, the Serralves Foundation boasts a priceless heritage estate, comprised of the Museum (designed by the 1992 Pritzker prize winning architect, Álvaro Siza Vieira); Serralves Villa (a unique example of Art Deco architecture); and by the Park (winner of the “Henry Ford Prize for the Preservation of the Environment” in 1997). As a European cultural institution serving the national community, the Serralves Foundation’s mission is to raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment. Serralves offers a wide range of different eating alternatives, throughout the day –the Restaurant in the Museum, the Auditorium bar or the Tea House in the Park. The Serralves Shop presents a wide selection of Portuguese and international contemporary design products and the Museum Book Shop specialises in publications dedicated to contemporary art. Located in one of Oporto’s most prestigious zones, with excellent access from the historic centre and main thoroughfares, the Serralves Foundation is a unique place in the city - where art and landscape, culture and heritage converge in a contemporary vision. A Must-See for your trip to Oporto!

Went on Sunday morning, turned out to be free admission (otherwise 7euro/pp). Museum was exhibiting modern artists; the exploded Vespa was interesting, the elm trees not so much. The grounds were very nice including the house. A very pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning. Note: Take bus 503 to the Serralves stop from Casa da Musica metro stop, much easier than walking.

We visited the Serralves specifically for the contemporary art museum, which we enjoyed immensely. But not long after arriving, we realized we had not eaten for a very long time - no biggy, since we had some food with us, but where could we eat? Well, it became clear that we could leave the museum, find a comfortable place on the lawn in the park, and have an impromptu picnic. Perfect!

And as for the museum, we thought the curation was fabulous. I don't remember the names of the artists, but there were retrospectives of I believe three artists on the main floor, and there was the space in each case to really give them their due, to allow their art, their visions, to breathe. In some cases there might be two or three pieces in a very large room, while in others one room might have many pieces hung on the walls in more conventional gallery style. In each case, the style of the curation served the style of the art.

We expecially loved the exhibit of the work of Alberto Carneiro, with whom we were not previously familiar.

The Serralves park is beautiful, monumental and well kept. The architecture of the museum is lovely, the size of the entire area is so huge that only exterior deserves a half day visit.
The area not to be missed.
