“An Oasis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

We circled it twice before we found it, but we found an oasis of trees, shrubs and flowers in a well-kept garden. Rooms in the castle tower had Old World charm with decorative antique furniture and headboards, The towel warmer in the bathroom was a modern touch, Breakfast was plentiful. There's no elevator in the tower but the staff will happily carry your bags up/down the stairs. Staff was very polite and English speaking and provided a handout guide showing most if the must-see sights on a stroll to the river, An inexpensive taxi ride back is recommended for the uphill walk. Parking is free.

Room Tip: Garden rooms have poor rating. Stay in the tower

Downtown Porto is bustling and crowded but when we turned into the impressive gates of this hotel we find ourselves in an oasis of calm with a garden surrounded by beautifully tiled buildings, including its own chapel. Staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English and our accommodation was pleasant and quite adequate. It was a delight to have the garden with its mixture of sun and shade, terraces and lawns, to relax in, and the dining room in which the inclusive breakfast was served was very impressive in size and decor which matched the almost 100 years age of the main building. Porto is hilly, but the walk down to the waterfront was interesting and after tapas and local wine, we took a very inexpensive taxi ride back to the hotel. The staff recommended a nearby restaurant, with local cuisine, for an evening meal which was very pleasant and just a short walk from the Castelo.

We spent our first night in Portugal at the hotel. The effect was magical; it was the prelude to our enchantment of the country . Yes, the rooms are small, but the breakfast was grand (don't miss that), and relaxing in the garden is quite a unique for a city hotel. Probably should not stay for a stretch of time, move on and keep fond memories of the tiles, the trees, the breakfast. We used the parking, and walked into town. We returned to the hotel from the center by taxi, reasonable price for the taxi, but had to indicate to the driver where the hotel was...
part of the fun, really.

The atmosphere, service & value are exceptional. The location is outside of the tourist hub. If you like to go for casual strolls to take in local sites, this would not be optimal. If you are arriving by car they have parking available at no extra charge.

This was the first hotel I can ever remember leaving because it was so poor. We booked for five nights and stayed for two. Unfortunately, we were put in a garden room and as someone else said, they were like a mobile homes. Plywood walls. Cold. Ugly. The bathroom was so small I could touch both walls with my elbows. No TV.

The main building might be great and it is certainly lovely from the outside. The gardens are beautiful and the tile walls lovely. Service was excellent and staff friendly.

But DO NOT stay here if you are in the garden rooms.

Room Tip: Only stay in the main building, never the garden rooms out the back

We really did enjoy the building, it's fantastic, beautiful inside and out. I'm so glad that we stayed in the actual Castelo as the garden rooms reminded me of a mobile home. The receptionists are really nice, but the service available is extraordinary - you can order certain drinks they will bring to you, but definitely bring your own food as nothing is available and it's a fair old march to town. They obviously recommend the same restaurant, Abadia and perhaps it's us, but we thought the food was awful. To be honest the food in Portugal is pretty poor. The breakfast was not very good, served in an exquisite room, 2 ladies fanny about preparing the most awful 'tropical' juice - left over fruit I think, stale cakes, but it's so pretty here and there's so much to do and see in Porto we just let it slide.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for one in the main building for the architecture, the garden one seemed the prett...
