You won't miss this part of Porto. It provides a great view to a lot of Port houses - something I always wanted to see. It's so seductive - to sit in one of those cafes with a bica (a small cup of strong espresso coffee) and a copo do vinho do Porto (a glass of Port wine)!

UNESCO World Heritage must mean something. The view from Gaia is one of the best town views in Europe...and I been in a lot of places. This image will remain in your memory for a long time.

It's cool to walk across the border and seat down when the light is up in the evening. Look at the boat, the activities around, the river, the bridge, etc. For the souvenir shops, there are some interesting shops at the end of the street but most of them sell normal souvenirs at higher price. As an advice from the hostel, it's better to have a rest at cube square rather than at coffee shops across the place to avoid 'tourist price'.

Winding, picturesque streets, views of the traditional port barges on the river and the stunning bridge, lots of casual sidewalk cafes on the waterfront--what's not to like? This is a perfect place to while away the afternoon drinking a Superbock and watching the river and foot traffic. There are good informal restaurants and some really nice ones, a bit more upscale. Navigating the streets down to the river can be a little challenging--some areas are steep with cobblestones, and be very careful with the cars, which can whip around corners at high speed. It's wonderful to stroll around during the day, though--perhaps hiking from the Se cathedral down through the old neighborhoods and ending up on the riverfront. I've heard from locals that it's not the safest place at night, though, so I would not go out exploring alone after dark.

Of course this is a tourist area, but it is a must visit. From the bridge the views of this area are spectacular. Once you actually get down to the area, its all shops and restaurants and of course they are all trying to bring you in when really you just want to stroll the river side and soak up the sun. Many river cruises leave from this area as well. This area is historic and beautiful. Be sure to see it from a distance as that really gives you the best view of the area.
