“Best location in Porto”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

First time in Porto and did not regret staying at this excellent property. The service was superb including the doormen, reception and the bar. When we arrived in the afternoon we were provided with a welcome drink and had a quick lunch at the snack bar which we enjoyed very much. We felt really welcome. Diego at the reception was especially good. We got a duplex room which had a good size but no view. if you want a view on the main city square, you will have to take a smaller room. Breakfast was just ok, nothing special; and noise on the square was heard during the night but may be because of the university graduation parties going at that time. parking costs 22 euros per day.

Dear Mr Michael G,

Thank you for choosing the InterContinental Porto Palacio das Cardosas during your stay in Porto city and for taking the time to review your experience.

We are delighted to hear that you had a memorable welcome to our Hotel and that our staff stood out, especially Diogo.

Once a year the Porto University makes a special Parade by the city center and at midnight they make a serenate, all the students and their families come to this traditional night. We hope our guests had a little In the Know from Porto tradition and join us in this special celebration. We also apologize for the inconvenient noise of this event.

All our Team is looking forward to welcome you back to continue discovering Porto city and it’s tradition like the coming 23rd June, São João the annual festive day of Porto.

Best regards,

ntercontinental Porto Portugal
After a long overnight flight we were greeted at 7am by a very pleasant and helpful receptionist who told us our soft, comfortable beds were ready for us! We expected to be walking the streets of Porto until the regular check-in time. Were we happy!
It continued to even get better from then on. The restaurant was great. Best breakfast all trip and dinner was special. The concierge team was outstanding directing and arranging activities for us. Rogério, one of the team, was so helpful and friendly. He even printed out our favorite Canadian newspaper for us, and helped us with our new GPS.
The location of the hotel is perfect on the main square in the old city.
We changed our reservation at the last minute from a less expensive hotel to the Intercontinental and were so happy we did.

Room Tip: We had a regular room and it was just fine.

We just stayed here for 4 nights. We were in an Executive Room with a lovely Juliet balcony that overlooked Praca da Liberdade. Great views. The room was gorgeous, huge with high ceilings, wood floors, elegant curtains and a super comfy bed! Very plush bathroom with separate shower and tub. Our rate included a hot breakfast at the hotel's Astoria restaurant which was very lavish and included freshly squeezed OJ. The service at the hotel was impeccable, in particular the concierges Vasco and Hugo who were really great giving advice on how to get to places, restaurant recommendations, etc. The location is also fantastic, bang in the town center and several cafes, restaurants, shops and ATM's all close by. We loved our stay here. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for an Executive Room on the third floor. Great views of the square and super quiet.

We spent 6 nights in one of the 2 story duplex suites. It was the best of all worlds. The hotel has two sides--one with the wonderful plaza views which can be noisy on the weekends, but were quite tame during the week; and the other side which was quiet for us all the time. The advantage of the duplex suites is that they have windows/doors on both sides so if you like fresh air at the cooler times of the year, you can pick which side/sides to open. We usually had both open for great ventilation, but if the plaza side was noisy, we closed it until later in the night. The plaza side also had a narrow shaded deck with an overhang, so that if it rained, one could still leave the doors open for great fresh air and in good weather offered shade. It wasn't a large space, but there were two chairs outside which I suspect in warmer weather, would be a nice place to sit and read. These rooms have great versatility. They had two full bathrooms as well--one on each floor-- which meant that my husband and I each had our own. The sitting room on the lower floor had a convertible sofa. There was excellent lighting on both floors for reading with many choices for which areas to light in a room. We sometimes used the air conditioning during the afternoons, and it was fully adequate and comfortable. Their was adequate storage to actually unpack the suitcases and store them out of the way under the stairs.

My husband used the fitness center every day. It has 3 treadmills, 1 elliptical, 1 upright and 1 recumbent bike, an exercise ball, mats, free weights, and a multi-machine which he used extensively and thought was top notch.

I won't repeat all the wonderful things other people have mentioned about the location and the quality of the staff-- their thoughtfulness, their excellent well thought out advice, and their genuine eagerness to provide full service--it is evident at every level.

We are returning to the hotel in three weeks time before we fly home. We would not be doing that unless we thought it was worth it. However, because we had such a wonderful time there, we are thinking of staying more than the night before our flight home.

I can't address the other rooms, but overall for a hotel, we can't recommend this hotel enough.

This hotel is just so stunning and in prime location. It is right in the heart of Porto, situated at the bottom of Peace Liberdade square. If you manage to bag a front facing room, you will have impressive views of the statue and square.

You walk into marble floors and fresh orchids and are treated like royalty. The rooms are beautiful and chic and spacious. Don't worry about the noise of being central, the windows block out the traffic well.

The staff are so helpful and come across genuine and friendly.

A short 5-10 min walk south of the hotel will take you down to the river, where you can walk along the charming ribeira and walk across the bridge for stunning views. Both the train station and metro station are less than a 5 minute walk, as is the amazing Livraria Lello - an amazing book shops with a central spiral staircase - the stuff of fairy tales.

Absolutely no complaints.

We enjoyed 3 nights in this centrally located hotel which has about 100 rooms. They were full but this didn't impact service which was impeccable. We even had a few glitches on the first day and staff ensured that all issues were addressed promptly and with a smile. Our stay was perfect. There was always a very knowledgeable concierge at the front directing you to local restaurants and places to buy port. Our room on the fourth floor was quiet and very comfortable except for the air conditioner which was somewhat noisy. The downstairs wood panel bar is cozy and on some nights includes exceptional singers. The bar also will bring you delicious hamburgers from the hotel's restaurant. Breakfast included hot foods, cheeses, cereals, breads, and coffee prepared as you like it. I didn't need to eat lunch! Massages are professional and excellent. They arranged a private tour of the Douro Valley for us...flawless. Book in advance.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room, ask for a room in the center or opposite the train station. The acoustics...

Our first trip to Porto and this hotel lived up to all the reviews we had read. Great staff- plaudits to Rogerio for selecting good restaurants and making all arrangements for transfers and suggesting places to visit. The hotel occupies a central location with easy walking access to most sights. probably not the best place for a great night's sleep at the weekend as you are on the main square with plenty of traffic and a few revellers. Having said that it's a gorgeous old building that has been refurbished to a high standard and we'd definitely use again.

Room Tip: executive rooms face the front and may be noisier than the cheaper deluxe rooms at the back
