We were taken on a site seeing tour arranged by the cruise organiser for passengers. Our guide spoke beautiful English and was extremely well informed pointing out many places of interest. We were taken to the Cathedral which is very large. and contains some impressive beautiful golden carvings, and stained glass windows especially the round rose one. To enter the cathedral there are some steps - I did not see another way. There were no signs for toilets either inside or by the car/coach park.
We saw many old and new bridges and an olive tree garden grown on the roof of some shops/cafes on the street below.
The cellar/caves of the Calem Port was very well organised. Once inside this modern entrance hall, we were shown where the toilets were situated. We were then taken on a conducted tour and though the corridors to see many pictures from the beginning of the company, to the Barrels holding many litres of the famous, red, tawny and white port. We then sat down to taste two of the ports - tawny and white - both very nice. Of course there were bottles, and other goodies on sale, and obviously priced in Euros, which I found to be very reasonably priced. We then returned to the ship with our purchases.
We did not have enough time to see Porto/Oporto all the more reason to visit again.

Two routes and tickets last 48 hours - one route takes you out to the Atlantic coast and then back along the Douro River. Free tour round Crofts - and a free glass of port. Helped to while away a very rainy day and to decide where to visit when the rain stopped.

My partner and I have taken this same company's hop on hop off bus tours in London, Dublin, and Rome. Usually it is a very good, solid tour company with great stops and a good tour. In Dublin there was even a live guide who was just hilarious. In Porto, it was horrible! The buses are falling apart, the seats were ripped up on both buses we were on, and the sound system barely works, we had to keep moving around to find two that functioned. The English track was horrible, it was much too quiet and the accent was almost impossible to understand. It was also very boring when you could actually hear it. She would start talking about buildings or sights or people without even explaining where they were (ie, left, right, centre, etc). It was very confusing and frustrating. In the end we gave up listening as the music in between was really annoying, the same track over and over again, anyway we couldn't hear or understand half of the tour so why listen! We noticed a huge gap between buses when we were downtown eating lunch, there was only one every 20 minutes or so, which is ridiculous for a hop on hop off bus tour in the main part of town.

The yellow bus tour looked much nicer. We passed them a few times and their buses looked newer and less crowded, I would give them a try if I had my time back.

Hop on hop off bus that helps you to get to know the town and than choose what you want to see more in depth. The cabel car that takes you up to have a look at the town, the panoramic promenade along the Douro with all the small decorated houses. A very special neighborhood.
The special bridges, the Baroque golden wood craft in the cathedrals... a treasure of a city.

I visited Porto at the end of June with my wife, son and his girlfriend. We booked a combined city tour which included the hop on-hop off RED bus route and a 1 hour trip taking in the 6 bridges of Porto.
The Red buses were plentiful but very busy, and when we used the buses the sound equipment failed to work on the majority of the seats, so no commentatry! The drivers were polite but unable to help. We noticed that there were as many Blue buses during the tour snd they did not appear to be as full?
We stopped off at the river to book our boat trip which was included in the price (20 euro's each). The guy on the stand booked us in for 13:30 and marked us down on his list. We duly arrived 15 minutes ahead of time to be told there was some delay and it would now be 14:00. I would add that all the boats were moored up and all the crew were sat around inside the boats?
At 14:00 were were made to wait a further 15 minutes before we set off.
The trip took approximately 45 minutes and not the advertised 1 hour and that was going slower coming back to use up time. The guide on the boat spoke various laungauges but said very little and we were left with the impression that they couldn't be bothered, they had our money so why worry.
I would not advise anyone to take this tour. Book your trips seperately and avoid the yellow fronted boats. I am sure Porto has lots more to offer we just didn't get offered it...
