We came for one thing: the Franceshina, after reading these reviews and the restaurant's own website paying tribute to Porto's signature sarnie. Packed full with both locals and tourists on our visit, but still managing friendly and quick service. The Franceshina is a monster of a sandwich; Santiago's take is true to form and delicious. Nice neat presentation. For taste, the bread holds up well in the tangy broth and the meats are plentiful and layered.

This place was recommended by a Portuguese colleague for having the best Francesinhas in Porto. The waiter was a bit grumpy but the food was, indeed, great and arrived quickly.

Confusingly there is another, different, Cafe Santiago a few doors down which we went to first. Looking at the pictures here I see that some others have gotten the two mixed up. We had Francesinhas at both, on consecutive days. My view is that both are really good but this one just about has the edge when it comes to the quality of the sausages.

I wish Francesinhas were available in the UK!

Great place to grab a Francesinha (a mega Porto style cheese and steak sandwich supposedly adopted from the French croque-monsieur). Sandwich with fries and a small beer only set me back 10.50 euros, and boy that meal was great. Atmosphere was not too bad - it's more like a local diner than a proper restaurant so don't expect a high standard of service. Would head straight back here the next time I'm in Porto.

Caesar greeted us and then ensured everyone is taken in the correct order for seating at this busy restaurant. It is popular with locals and tourists alike. Generous portions of good tasting food is served at excellent prices. Service is very fast, friendly and efficient. This is the best deal we have found for a evening meal during the past 5 weeks in Portugal. What more could one ask for - good food, fast service all at an excellent price. The place is packed with customers but even so the noise level wasn't bothersome.
