“Best restaurant in Porto!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2014 via mobile

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and all of the staff at O Paparico. It is very obvious that the three starters on the table when you arrive are optional and there are other choices available. The owner could not be more helpful in explaining the choices. When we admitted that we couldn't decide between two main courses, he quickly suggested that we try both. We had pork and octopus. Both were exceptional. A significant surprise was the reasonableness of the wine list prices. A wonderful place!

“Picture perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2014

From the moment of reservation until the last minute we had a superb experience at this place, and to all visiting Porto, here is my recommendation, don't miss it.
When arriving be aware of the location, even in front of the restaurant we dint realize it was there, in fact we went in another restaurant closed by, and finally we where guided to Paparico, there isn't any sign or exterior aspect of being a restaurant, looks more like a regular family house. The deco and interiors are cozy and rustic with interesting traditional Portuguese handcraft objects, candle light, fresh flowers and white linen table clothes. Is divided in smaller rooms, and on the arrival you find a very nice bar area with an impressive selection of wines and spirits, we were invited for an aperitif and couldn't resist, great Gin tonic, best I ever had for sure. On the table we found some very nice appetizers, but the highlight was the octopus Carpaccio with pickled onion and coriander, what a delicacy, brilliant, fresh and well balanced. As main, and because, most of the courses are meant to be sheared, we took the traditional veal, but served with season mushrooms and marrow bone, great, but even more surprising was the oven made mash potato with onion and cumin, delicious. As dessert we recommend the hazelnut tart with lemon sorbet and the wine pairing recommended by the sommelier, an aged white Port (I didn't know that even existed) together it simply worked out perfect. The service is very professional without being pompous and all we can finally say is, guys keep on making people happy. Thanks for the perfect night.

“We Had a Different Experience”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2014

We chose this restaurant based on the recommendation of our hotel, the Intercontinental, and from reading tripadvisor reviews. The hotel arranged a 9 pm dining time which was ideal for us. We had high expectations given all the reviews. It all started so well--the ambience was nice but not exceptional. The arrangement of a few tables in separate rooms was quite pleasant. The staff was friendly and informative and seemed quite earnest. As described by others, there were appetizers offered upon our arrival, but we chose others which my husband enjoyed, but I did not. In the one case, the one we expected to be savory was quite sweet, and neither of us thought the other was particularly notable. As a main, we chose the charcoal grilled cod with potatoes. When it arrived, it was the size of a 2 and 1/2 pound pork roast--grilled, but that was it-- served in a dish with over a cup of olive oil and some steamed potatoes. We were disappointed and ate some of it. Our dessert was deconstructed lemon meringue which was sweet rather than the expected tart. For us this was a real disappointment. When the manager of the restaurant approached us after our dinner to ask if we enjoyed our dinner, we thought she already knew because of how much we didn't eat. However, since she asked, I told her that we expected something more complex in the main--maybe a sauce to accompany the cod or a mixture of vegetables which would complement each bite of the cod. Her response was "something complex like mashed potatoes or potato salad". We ignored the insult, but will not forget it. Too bad.

A restaurant with a reputation like this does not keep employees who insult guests who happened to have ordered the wrong menu item. She asked for input and we gave it tactfully. No reason for insult.

“Special restaurant”

Very accommodating about dietary restrictions (vegetarian) while showcasing traditional Portuguese food. Wonderful atmosphere and attentive service. You must try their house red wine.

“It would be shame to come to Porto and miss this”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2014

The first thing to say about O Paparico is that it does not rely on passing trade. It is located in an unremarkable corner of north Porto, miles away from the touristy centre. The building is easy to miss: there is no obvious sign bearing its name, or even advertising it as a restaurant.

This is clearly a place for those in the know. As you enter, you are struck by its medieval feel. Dim light from chandeliers reflects off shadowy stone walls; young men in dark suits welcome you as if into a secret society.

In due course you are seated at your assigned table, where you discover that starters and wine have already been laid out for you. The master of ceremony offers vague alternatives, but by now you know better than change anything about the ritual.

The tables are large, and there are only a handful: evidently the company prefers to focus on a few choice guests like yourself rather than on vulgar multitudes. And you repay it with gratitude for the feast prepared in your honour.

The pre-laid starters - including paté with Port sauce, a cod ceviche and sheep milk cheese – are succulent. The mains serve two (if you want separate dishes, that's too bad). We chose the pork with mashed apples and did not regret it.

For desserts we had fruit "macédoine" (it does not just sound better than fruit salad – it tastes better too!) and a traditional Portuguese chestnut cake. The house red – a smooth Dao – was a worthy accompaniment to a superlative meal.

With a generous tip, the total came to only about 100 euros for two. Having to walk a mile back to nearest metro did not matter after such an experience (buses don't run after about 10 pm and we'd had already our taxi for the day).

Long may O Paparico remain off the beaten track. But anyone who comes to Porto without making their way here is missing out on one the city's most intriguing attractions.
