“Costumes, character and champagne”
Reviewed August 20, 2014

The good: Location, location, location... This hotel is very central located and tourist sights are in walkable distance (always keep in mind that Porto has a lot of steep streets no matter where you stay). The apparent theme of the hotel is theatre but could also be seen as movie theatre, the mix of costumes, celluloid lights, movie audience wallpaper, thick curtains and camera print carpet leaves it up to the hotel guest. The rooms are spacious and keep with the dark color scheme of the hotel. Be prepared for a open bathroom concept, although shower and toilet are divided by glass doors. The staff is very welcoming an helpful with advice what to see and where to eat. The breakfast menu has plenty to offer and each morning the guests can start their day with chilled champagne. Every morning a different pastry was provided for guests with a sweet tooth. A small outside patio offers space for a late night cocktail and is welcome by smokers.

The bad: The interior designer was clearly a bit overwhelmed by the decision to go for the theatre or movie theme, the decoration is a mismatch but stays within the same dark color scheme. The website states the hotel has a rooftop terrace; technically yes but there where no chairs nor a bar so it was a bit wasted space. The rooms have open bathroom concept, think about how comfortable you are with your travel companion. The rooms are despite their big size a bit outdated and the air-condition is central regulated which means temperatures at night were always at 22 degree Celsius.

The conclusion: If you can look pass the gloomy interior design and the slightly outdated rooms you will find a hotel that puts lots of efforts in providing you with a very good stay. It's central location, welcoming and friendly staff and a plentiful breakfast buffet with champagne, fresh fruits and pastry will do the rest to make sure you'll have a very good hotel experience.

I liked this hotel. Really, I did. The room was spacious, comfortable, quiet and clean. The staff were friendly and attentive. The hotel had bags of character. However...

We arrived in the late afternoon. I walked through the front door and automatically reached to take my sunglasses off, only to realise that I had already done this. The entire hotel reception area wallowed in twilight.

The hotel was previously a theatre (the clue is in the name) and the interior designer had decided to run with that as a theme. Good idea. But as we found out, even a good idea can be pursued too far.

The entire hotel was decorated in a copper tone. The seats were copper. The walls were copper. The windows shaded in copper net curtains. Was it atmospheric? Sure. But I felt in need of an usherette with a torch as well.

We took the lift - decorated in copper tones - to our room on the third floor, to stumble into a corridor that was still darker. I've seen better lit dark rooms. (Indeed, given the clientele of the hotel, I imagine there may yet be a middle aged French gay man lurking in the shadows eagerly awaiting his next encounter.)

Our room was comfortable and clean, and we both slept well throughout our stay. But there were some quirks in the design. Continuing the theatre theme, the bathroom had no door but a heavy copper net curtain instead. The toilet faced straight into the bedroom through this, and while it had a smoked (copper) glass door, what was going on was all too visible. Even in the closest relationship, some things should be kept firmly backstage.

The shower was great. The copper theme really worked here, and with elaborate controls, it resembled the helm of Captain Nemo's Nautilus.

The room had a kettle but no coffee. Apparently the hotel manager doesn't like coffee. My other half, who is the one Irishman who doesn't drink tea, was most unimpressed by this.

Breakfast was good, though once again it was a gloomy affair. We had the option to sit outside, but since the tables were shrouded under black canopies, the light was not much better there either. We peered at each other through the darkness and thought it was unfair that carrots were not to be seen on the breakfast table.

The decoration theme really worked in the bar. The bar was great, actually. I'd drink there even if I wasn't staying in the hotel.

Overall, it was an enjoyable stay and absolutely ideal for someone who had tired of the Hotel Transylvania. But my recommendation for the hotel management? Don't be afraid of a few 100W bulbs.

Everything in the hotel is about theatre and that is clear. It looks good, the room is spacious with a rain shower. You don't hear any noises from your neighbours. The beds are comfortable and the hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of the city. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and with fresh fruit. Negative was the wifi which often didn't work as it should. It also is very dark everywhere and that is strange when you get in from the sun.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the street are quieter.

This place has it all!
Smack in the middle of town in walking distance to almost everything.
Great service, good English.
Comfortable beds, wonderful shower.
The breakfast buffet was plentiful and very fresh, served with both freshly pressed orange juice and complimentary bubbly wine.
Only downside is the very slow wifi.

Lovely staff. Fabulous restaurant, Great bar.
All the staff were polished, lovely, friendly. Professionals.
Very nice rooms, spacious, big bathroom, fabulous rain shower.
Glass toilet stall open to room, could be challenging for the uptight.
Dark hotel is moody, tranquil, romantico.
Go I say !

Room Tip: High floor, overlooking street is best. No view from courtyard rooms but would be quieter.

The negatives:
Very, very dark hotel. Hence difficult to see whether the place is clean or not.
Great shower but very difficult to get in and out of the bath to have the shower.

Hotel is centrally located, walking distance to everything! You will not get a better hotel for this price - very clean, all amenities provided, staff 100% helpful and great buffet breakfast as well as perfect location! We were celebrating our anniversary and the hotel kindly provided us with champagne and chocolate cake! A real treat thank you! We were also accommodated with our request for a top floor room, and our room faced the inner courtyard which was very quiet. Would definitely recommend this hotel and if returning to porto would stay again!
