“Great hotel”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

My wife and I spent 3 nights in this hotel. It has to be one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Due to a damaged sink we were upgraded from a standard room to a junior suite, and I have to say that it was stunning.

There are lots of other reviews that mention the lighting and bathrooms. The lighting is dim/subtle, I didnt find this an issue, but my wife found the reception and corridors rather oppressive, and impractical for make up application. The bathrooms are fairly unique, but there are doors/blinds/curtains that do offer enough privacy.

We didnt eat in the hotel (apart from breakfast) but the menu looked very good.

Breakfast was fine, not the best I`ve ever had, but by no means the worst. I recommend going early, or you may have to wait for a table.

Good central location, some road noise, but its a city center hotel, what do you expect!

Excellent staff, the most comfortable bed I have ever had in a hotel, and very nice complimentary port and chocolates!

One point- I think the cleaners suffer from the same issues as guests, as I found a black sock from a previous guest when I was tidying up. Wouldnt have noticed it but I stood on it in bare feet! Perhaps head torches for the staff?? :)

The wife and I spent 4 nights here over the bank holiday and had a wonderful time. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is great, bang in the middle of the old town and still walkable down to the river front (taxi ride back up the hill is cheap as chips anyway!). Room was well designed, massive and comfortable bed, great shower and interesting design. Breakfast was plentiful and of good quality and the restaraunt was simply delicious and a must even if you are not staying at the hotel!!

We also got a completely unexpected and very welcome bottle of wine that turned up in the room on the 3rd day which was a nice suprise! I think that summed things up for us really.

The hotel is fairly dark which might not appeal to everyone, but I thought the decor was great and really well thought out.

would thoroughly recommend to anyone!

One of the best hotel stays in my memory:

The 'romantic' room was fabulous, the 7 course tasting menu was phenomenal, the wines fantastic and the breakfast on my all time top 3 list of hotel breakfasts made up of only superb components.

Beautiful interior, great & bold tastes: this was a fantastic haven for experiencing Porto. I can very much recommend Hotel Teatro for a great leisure stay.

A truly individual hotel. As others have commented the subdued lighting is completely different but so in keeping with the hanging rails of costumes, funky carpet and huge audience themed murals. The welcome and information from reception staff could not be faulted; the room was stunning with lots of natural light and an extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom arrangements were strange but not as public as others have mentioned. The toilet and bidet were closed off by a sliding glass door. The rain forest shower did rather make a splash and mopping up needed but with care the flood was minimised! Good slippers and robe. Soft towels and decent toiletries. Ladies, take an illuminated magnifying mirror for make up as bathroom mirror over basin deeply recessed. Port and chocolates a very nice touch.

Breakfast good but crowded. Some items were very popular and not immediately replenished. Limited selection of hot items. Young waiting staff were a delight. Mostly couples but one family with a baby.

Location of hotel extremely convenient for centre, restaurants, railway station and shopping. Did not use hotel restaurant as wanted to eat out in city; lots of choice and reasonable prices. Hotel restaurant, very high end but was offering 10 percent off.

Overall very pleasing experience.

Room Tip: Go for a Tribune room, you will not be disappointed. No noise at all!

My wife and I stayed for 34 Days in Oporto.
It was really a pleasure to be a guest in this Hotel.
Everyone was extremly freindly and helpfully.
The Hotel design is dark but very special and outstanding.
Maybe it will be good to havea little more light in the bathroom, especially for the ladys!
But the atmosphaere ist great.

The location is perfect for all tours, nightlife, dinner, shopping - excellent!

and the restaurant is breathtaking !!!
We are really gourmets and now a lot of good restaurants and we can say that this crew is now
one of our favorites. the food, with the wines and teh perfect service was perfect.

so we say thank you for the hole staff and hope to go back.

Just got back from a wonderful visit here, didn't want to come back! The service is very good and the staff so friendly and helpful. If you want a relaxed romantic break this hotel is for you. The rooms are on the dark side and the only critisism is lack of good lighting when getting ready for a night out, however the plus points outweighed that fact.

Highly recommend it and I must say the coffee is the best I have had in Europe!Plus the beds the most sumptuous!

My wife & I stayed here for 3 nights in early May having booked an offer through Voyage Prive. The Teatro is a good hotel and situated well to be able to walk to all the main sites within the centre (it's about 10 - 15mins to get to the Douro river), is close to a stop for the Yellow city bus tour as well as to the metro and the main shopping area.

As part of the Voyage Prive offer, we were upgraded to Galley room (from a Tribune) which was a decent size and the hotel provided a free bottle of port and chocs in the room. The room had a flat screen TV, mini bar and plenty of storage space (hanging and shelves although both are only covered by a curtain which is in keeping with the theatre style décor). A kettle is also available along with tea & coffee.

The bathroom was again a good size but as previous TA comments have stated only a shower curtain separates the shower from the toilet which does feel a little odd. In addition, many of the practicalities are missing from the washing area. There is very limited space to store for toiletries / toiletry bags anywhere in the bathroom and only a couple of hooks for towels which weren't close to the shower and they kept on falling off anyway !

The choice as breakfast is limited with several cereals, a limited choice of bread (toasting bread or crusty rolls), lots of fresh fruit and then a small selection of meats and cheeses (4 in total) and yogurts. Unfortunately, the breakfast room just cannot cope with the number of guests during the busiest times and you either have to eat in the bar area or stand in line queuing for a table to become free. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant during our stay as we prefer to eat out (please try La Riccotta which is just around the corner from the hotel and was great although a little pricey) but we did have a club sandwich in the bar one night which was very good and the service was fantastic.

It is fair to say that the service provided by all the staff was very good and in particular our check-in experience was fantastic (many thanks to Sylvia I believe) with lots of information about the hotel but also the surrounding area and key attractions with maps and brochures also provided. The hotel also provides free Wi- Fi throughout the hotel and the signal was good in both the public areas and bedroom. As many have already stated, it is very dark throughout the hotel and in my opinion a little extra lighting would be a good thing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Porto and would recommend a day trip up the Douro river as a great day out (we booked with Rota do Douro through the hotel). If you do book this company then the boat, food and on board service were all very good but on a Saturday they include a trip to a port vineyard for a tour and tasting (so the trip costs slightly more) but this was a waste of time and there are much better tours on offer in Porto. We travelled as far as Regua which took c7hours, you then get c90mins in Regua which was plenty of time to wander around - you then catch the train back to Porto which takes c2hours but was a very pretty journey as the railway follows the river for much of the time)

We tried two port tasting tours during our stay, one with Calem (which is included when you purchase a 2 Day ticket from the Yellow city bus company along with a boat tip to view the bridges - 22EUR for 2 Days unlimited 'Hop On, Hop Off') and also Offley - both were very good.

The Teatro is a good hotel but I think with a few slight improvements it could be so much better.
