this hotel has, unsurprisingly, a theatrical theme. Lighting is by film stage type lights and spotlights. There are costumes hanging in the lobby (NOT for trying on, we learned) and a backdrop photo of an expectant audience. The bar is comfortable and breakfast is an excellent buffet. Our room was a reasonable size with a good large bed. The bathroom was behind a glass wall, although there was a blind for the modest, and the loo was concealed. The soundproofing was very good indeed. My only complaint is that there was no mirror to make up in as the bathroom mirror was marooned behind the washbasin and both that and the mirror in the bedroom were in very dim light. Still, I suppose the wrinkles didn't show, either.

Room Tip: If you are there for more than a couple of days you might prefer a larger room.

This hotel is designed to within an inch of its life.

They need to send up staff with you to get you to your room. Not because the shower is confusing. Becuase the hallways are too dark and the numbers are hard to find.

The rooms are teeny, with nowhere near enough convenient outlets. We struggled to find two people's worth of space for our clothes. We do not travel with an unreasonably large amount of clothing. There were few places to sit.

The mirrors are all smoked-type glass, so you can barely see anything. There is nowhere near enough lighting in any place of the hotel. Except, well, there are big spotlights that occasionally blind you.

The bed is lovely. I found it extremely comfortable. My partner found it too hard. The sheets are beautifully crisp white linens.

The hotel is all full of curtains. Everywhere you look. This makes the rooms seem even smaller. That said, I really appreciated a hotel room with actually dark walls.

The internet is atrocious. Just shamefully bad.

There are dogs nearby, which bark. Often. Loudly. Many of them. I have no idea where they are, but they're very loud.

The breakfast was fine, though the waiters were remarkably diffident.

The staff was good, though one night, they pointed us to a restaurant that they didn't tell us how to find. Oops.

The biggest thing I objected to, though, was the LACK OF A BATHROOM DOOR. Instead, there's a translucent curtain. Because really, when my partner opens the hotel room, it's always lovely to have the only thing separating me from the world being a translucent curtain.

Oh, and it's also really delightful not having any sound blocking at all for when someone's using the toilet. Or real visual blocking.

And it's a *brilliant* idea not to have any ventilation system in the bathrooms.

Seriously. This might be okay for a solo traveller (possibly an exhibitionist? The first morning, I was looking out across the courtyard, as most rooms seem to overlook it, and saw a naked guy waking up in his room across the way). But it's ridiculous as a home base for a couple staying for a number of days.

Really enjoyed staying at Hotel Teatro - it was so conveniently located to get where we wanted to walk to. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating.

The shower was JUST AMAZING. An overhead rain head in its own room.

The bed was very soft like sleeping in a pile of feathers. Strongly recommend for any stay in Porto

Very conveniently located, clean hotel, lovely staff, very very comfortable. There were three of us in 2 rooms that were enclosed by a common door - so it felt like an apartment.

Gym consisted of a couple of machines - no treadmill. No spa in the building but they do provide in room massages on request. Between 2 rooms we did not have a bath in either bathroom. Breakfast is fresh and very lovely.

I would be happy to stay here again however if you're looking for a pampering luxury package you might want to go looking elsewhere.

Following a weeks cruise on the River Douro we decided to extend our holiday with a short stay in Porto and chose the Teatro for its central location.

On arrival we found the reception staff to be extremely quick and efficient and we were shown quickly to our room. We also found them very helpful when sorting out a good restaurant.

The hotel is quite dark, all browns and subdued lighting, and although we found this a little disconcerting at first, we soon got used to it and felt that it added to the ambience of the hotel.

Our room was comfortable and well equipped. The large bed and the pillows were blissful, especially after a week sleeping on an extremely hard bed. I must admit that the bathroom took a little getting used to with the toilet and shower areas only being separated by brown tinted glass panels so if you are shy, it may not be for you!

Both the bedroom and the bar area had some very interesting books about Porto which we were able to read whilst enjoying a very pleasant wine and the drinks prices are very reasonable, especially for a hotel.

The only disappointment for us with this hotel was the breakfast but it certainly wouldn’t stop us staying here again.
