“Delightful Douro”

Reviewed June 13, 2013

A week's cruise with Croisi Europe on the River Douro exceeded all our expections. Faultless would be the best way to describe it. The courteous and ever helpful crew knew exactly how to make us feel at home, and offered the passengers a wide choice of outings, as well as a range of entertainment on board. The Portuguese folk evening was the best and most colourful. The food was plentiful and appetising, and the scenery was beautiful ... vineyards cascading down to the riverside in scenery as peaceful and pleasing as any I've ever seen. We had a couple of days moored at the charming city of Porto, then cruised to the Spanish border. A coach trip into Spain to visit the historic city of Salamanca gave the holiday an extra dimension, and then it was back on board as our cruise returned to Porto. I have always wanted to visit Portugal. I'm glad I have, and I'm especially pleased it was with Croisi Europe on the River Douro.

We took a cruise on the Douro River from the dock in front of the CS Vintage House Hotel in Pinhao. The boat was a 30' power boat with only 3 couples on board. Captain Antonio served us port wine and water as we calmly motored up and down the river. It was very peaceful and we saw a lot of beautiful countryside, consisting of terraced vineyards, grand estates (quintas) and rugged mountain terrain. There was no canned presentation about what we were seeing, but Captain Antonio spoke good English and was happy to answer our questions.

We chose this ship rather than the larger, more modern ships because it only takes 48 people. We were so glad that we did. There were 4 of us and we were spoiled. The Douro Prince is a charming older ship with lots of gleaming varnished wood and polished brass...but the big difference was the staff. They could not do enough for us.We spent a week going from Porto to the Spanish border and back.Lots of side trips and entertainment and wine, wine, wine. The excursion to Sandeman's was an experience. The weather was cool in the early mornings, but that was the nicest time to see the mirror-smooth river reflecting the glorious scenery. The crew even put on a surprise show for us that had us all clapping and laughing.Fernando the bartender is a hoot, and Maria the tour guide is wonderful.
Voyages Jules Verne made our arrangements, but there are many that handle this lovely ship. There is a lot of history here in this northern area of Portugal, less popular than the south and it is well worth going.

We spent 7 days on the Amavida going downstream from Vega Terron to Porto. The scenery is spectacular and until you get quite close to Porto is not very well populated. There are grape vines everywhere and the amount of work to terrace the hills is amazing. Of course there was lots of Port tasting, but for us the serenity and beautiful scenery were the highlights. One of the staff recommended the train trip alongside the Douro starting at 6:30 am and watching the sunrise along the way. Apparently the trip to Porto takes about 6 hours.

Very relaxing way to spend 55 mins taking in the 6 bridges on the Douro River, plus most of the cruises give a free entry ticket to a port cellar and a free glass of port!
