“Guest House Douro- a great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

We stayed at Guest House Douro at the beginning and end of our trip to Portugal in July 2012. It was a great place to stay and our hosts, Carmen and Jaoa delightful. Their warm welcome, recommendations on restaurants, places to vist, Port cellars and advice were excellent. The guesthouse is in a fantastic location in the historic centre with a number of rooms with views over the River Douro. We were very comfortable staying there, enjoying Jaoa's artistic and delicious breakfasts, a treat we looked forward to every morning along with white Port aperitifs in the afternoon. A home away from home.

We had an incredible 2 nights at the GHD - we are sorry that we couldn't have stayed longer. Room 402 looks out on the Douro river and over to the Port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. It was incredibly comfortable, small and well appointed. Carmen and João are fantastic hosts, and we felt the kind of personal warmth that you could never find in a regular hotel.

Breakfast was fantastic - real cafe latte, an incredible assortment of fruit from all over the world, yogurt, cereal, bread and jam and butter and cheese and ham/chorizo, etc! Top that off with the restaurants that are nearby, and we were in food nirvana. Restaurant ODE is not to be missed - the passionate chef, Cristovão, even gave us recommendations for restaurants in cities that we visited later in our trip! This restaurant is only 30 meters from GHD, and a second great, small family run restaurant (Restaurant A Grade) was only 10 meters further up the hill.

If possible, stay at least 3 nights and try to get out for some day trips and for exploring Porto. It was a wonderful city, great hospitality, and warm and welcoming people. Thank you, Carmen and João

If you're looking for a place to stay in Porto, look no further, this place is by far the best. My husband and I were treated very well, something you wouldn't receive at a regular hotel. Great location and views!

went for a long weekend in november and thouroughly enjoyed the guest house douro. Carmen and Joao are very hospitable, the hotel is very boutique and extremely stylish and the breakfast was out of this world! the location for porto town and also for gaia for the port tasting is excellent as its located right on the river - all in all, tremendous!

I initially booked this weekend away for my partners birthday, but then decided to extend the invitation to my best friend and her husband as a wedding gift. We had an amazing weekend of fine dining and port tasting... Unfortunately this didn't allow us enough time to visit the old town and the sites that Porto has to offer, so we are using this as an excuse to go back next year and we will definitely stay at Guest House Douro again. Joao and Carmen are very knowledgeable of the sites and will help point you in the direction of whatever it is that interests you.

The Guest House is in the perfect location for the cafes and restaurants along the Douro and the Port cellars are a 20 minute walk across the bridge, all conveniently located within a square half mile. Guest House Duoro itself is absolutely perfect. Carmen and Joao create a lovely relaxing atmosphere, make you feel very very welcome, almost as old friends visiting for the weekend, without being intrusive. A free glass of white port on arrival was very welcome and the breakfasts are absolutely beautiful, fruit creations, lovely bread rolls, cakes and jams.

We will definitely return.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 202 which has a lovely balcony and our friends stayed in 302 just above us which h...

My wife and I just spent 16 days in Portugal and stayed in nine different accommodations. The Guest House Douro ("GHD") was far and away the best of the bunch. We stayed in many wonderful places with rooms big enough to sleep entire villages, swimming pools, saunas, and giant dinning rooms. The GHD has none of those. What it does have is two of the most wonderful innkeepers in a beautifully restored medieval building in the best location in Porto. From the moment we rang the front door bell to the hugs goodbye a short two days later, Carmen and Joao became our newest best friends. We have never before had our hosts take us to dinner at their favorite local restaurant and then walk, talk and laugh till late into the night. The beautiful room with a view of the port houses across the river and the spectacular presentation of fresh fruits, cheeses, meats, pastries and rich coffee were unmatched in our travels. Staying at the GHD is like spending time with family during the holidays without any of the stress. Thank you Carmen and Joao for your love and friendship. We will be back.

This Guest House was one of the highlights of our Spain/Portugal vacation. Carmen and João were the perfect hosts and did everything right. They provided us with their great knowledge and advice of the area, and we were treated very favorably at a restaurant we attended on Carmen and João's recommendation. We had a room on the second level facing the river. It was very tastefully decorated and the use of space in all the Guest House was amazing. The breakfasts were excellently presented and got us off to a good start on the day. We were truly amazed with how well our hosts ran this business and all while making us feel like we were friends rather than customers. Kudos to all the staff. It truly shows the care and attention you put into the guest house and to your visitors. We would recommend Guest House Douro as a "must" on any vacation to the area.

Room Tip: Although Carmen and Joao advised that the room on the second floor facing the river was a bit smalle...
