I initially booked this weekend away for my partners birthday, but then decided to extend the invitation to my best friend and her husband as a wedding gift. We had an amazing weekend of fine dining and port tasting... Unfortunately this didn't allow us enough time to visit the old town and the sites that Porto has to offer, so we are using this as an excuse to go back next year and we will definitely stay at Guest House Douro again. Joao and Carmen are very knowledgeable of the sites and will help point you in the direction of whatever it is that interests you.

The Guest House is in the perfect location for the cafes and restaurants along the Douro and the Port cellars are a 20 minute walk across the bridge, all conveniently located within a square half mile. Guest House Duoro itself is absolutely perfect. Carmen and Joao create a lovely relaxing atmosphere, make you feel very very welcome, almost as old friends visiting for the weekend, without being intrusive. A free glass of white port on arrival was very welcome and the breakfasts are absolutely beautiful, fruit creations, lovely bread rolls, cakes and jams.

We will definitely return.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 202 which has a lovely balcony and our friends stayed in 302 just above us which h...

My wife and I just spent 16 days in Portugal and stayed in nine different accommodations. The Guest House Douro ("GHD") was far and away the best of the bunch. We stayed in many wonderful places with rooms big enough to sleep entire villages, swimming pools, saunas, and giant dinning rooms. The GHD has none of those. What it does have is two of the most wonderful innkeepers in a beautifully restored medieval building in the best location in Porto. From the moment we rang the front door bell to the hugs goodbye a short two days later, Carmen and Joao became our newest best friends. We have never before had our hosts take us to dinner at their favorite local restaurant and then walk, talk and laugh till late into the night. The beautiful room with a view of the port houses across the river and the spectacular presentation of fresh fruits, cheeses, meats, pastries and rich coffee were unmatched in our travels. Staying at the GHD is like spending time with family during the holidays without any of the stress. Thank you Carmen and Joao for your love and friendship. We will be back.

This Guest House was one of the highlights of our Spain/Portugal vacation. Carmen and João were the perfect hosts and did everything right. They provided us with their great knowledge and advice of the area, and we were treated very favorably at a restaurant we attended on Carmen and João's recommendation. We had a room on the second level facing the river. It was very tastefully decorated and the use of space in all the Guest House was amazing. The breakfasts were excellently presented and got us off to a good start on the day. We were truly amazed with how well our hosts ran this business and all while making us feel like we were friends rather than customers. Kudos to all the staff. It truly shows the care and attention you put into the guest house and to your visitors. We would recommend Guest House Douro as a "must" on any vacation to the area.

Room Tip: Although Carmen and Joao advised that the room on the second floor facing the river was a bit smalle...

This lovely Guest House ticks all the boxes - tastefully decorated rooms with every detail perfect; best location on the River Douro & in walking distance of the historical centre; friendly & warm service from the owners, Carmen & Joao; the breakfast a real work of art & delicious as well. However, it is not these attributes that make this place so special - it is the warmth of the owners who are able to make travellers feel as though they are honoured guests in a friend's home, for whom nothing is too much trouble. I was near the end of a long holiday, nearly two months, & nowhere else was I made to feel like a friend rather than an anonymous traveller.

Room Tip: Rooms either have river views or overlook a lovely old alley. The river views are great.

There are not enough fabulous words to say about this wonderful b&b and our hosts to truly do it justice, but we will try:

This was the first stop on our 4 city honeymoon and everything was just perfect. From the planning and booking with Carmen, to our warm welcome very early in the morning (complete with legendary breakfast!) to the thoughtful appointments in the guest rooms and the dinner reservations made for us every night at the best secret local spots. Nothing was overlooked and the personal attention that Carmen and Joao gave us to be sure our stay was absolutely perfect was truly heartfelt and sincere. The room we booked overlooked the street and was adorable. We loved peering out the window and taking in the sights on the street below. Also, the hotel was impeccably clean which we really appreciated and we didn't mind the 1am curfew at all (we never felt rushed to get home in time).

Writing this review makes us reminisce on how we wish we were there right now, and cant wait to go back. In fact, my husband still proclaims how much he misses Joao's breakfast every day he wakes up!

We loved our stay at Guest House Douro! A lovely inn with comfortable, modern rooms and owner/operators Carmen and Joao who will make you feel like family. They steered us to great restaurants , shops and places of cultural interest. Joao prepared a lovely breakfast with a fruit salad masterpiece that I shall never forget! They took a vested interest in our son who is an aspiring chef, and Carmen set up a fantastic cooking lesson for him in the fine restaurant DOP.
Warm people, inviting atmosphere and lots of fun!!!

This hotel is outstanding in every way: the location in an historical site on a river on one side and a cobblestone alley with Henry the Navigator's birthplace on the other, the warmest and most efficient hosts ever, Carmen and João, who took care of our every need and made us feel as though we were family, we were well fed, given delicious port each evening, and given excellent advice for site-seeing and restaurants. Our hosts wanted us to feel as though we were "home" and they succeeded. Furthermore, the great care taken in renovating the hotel is evident--the building is ancient on the outside and crisp modern inside; it is obvious that each space in the hotel was given a lot of love and attention. I recommend this hotel to everyone. A gem in the city of Porto.

Room Tip: You can't have a bad room--there are only two rooms per floor and we stayed in 302 and 301 and h...
