“Pleasures of Porto”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

One of the joys of Porto was the Guest House Douro and the owners ,Carmen and Joao. Modern comfortable rooms are arranged in an ancient stone building, that they saved from neglect, and the Douro and history flow steps away! Maps, spread before us ,were highlighted, so we could absorb as much of this remarkable city as our interests and stamina allowed. Breakfast was art, everyday a new sculpture of fruit arranged on a platter that I would devour with my eyes first, then my fork. There were homemade jams and croissants and other temptations too. Flowers arrived if the country garden was cooperative and there were invitations for tea or other libations in the evening. Everyone of their recommendations for dinning, parking, Port or shopping was spot on. They have put their jointly adventurous heart and soul into this and it shows. I felt like Royalty staying with dear Friends!

We chose Guest House Douro somewhat at random...and found excellent accomodations, great location, but above all great hospitality. Guest House Douro is really the home and the life of Carmen and Joao, and we thouroughly enjoyed our stay. The rooms are on the small side, and those facing the river come with wonderful views but also with a lot of street noise, but it is really part of the charm. Joao's breakfast table is a work of art, and so very good.

Room Tip: Rooms on Fonte Taurina a quieter, but do you really want to miss the view of the river. We ended up...

We stayed in August 2012 while on our honeymoon.
We liked Portugal but we loved Guest House Douro.

The moment you step inside, you're home. The hosts, Carmen and Joao, will greet you as family. They are friendly, intelligent and honest hosts.

The location is superb, right on the waterfront with spectacular views and close to many sights.
The small touches make the guest house special. From the fresh flowers in the room, the glass of port at night to the amazing breakfasts.
Hungry? They will make a reservation for you at a restaurant close by. All their recommendations were excellent and we felt like we got preferred service being Carmen and Joao's guests.
Tired? Rooms are beautifully decorated, clean, modern and although small, we found our room very comfortable.
Curious? Carmen and Joao know the city inside out and will make sure to explain where to go based on what you want to do. They will even give you a city map where all the attractions are highlighted.

You know how occasionally you read reviews where the writer says they almost didn't write something because they wanted to keep the place a well kept secret? We felt exactly like this. We've traveled to many places around the world. I only wish there was a Guest House Douro in every country.

Honestly, stop looking, this is the place to stay in Porto.

Room Tip: Room 202, although quite small, has a beautiful balcony and amazing views but all rooms are great.

Hosts, Carmen and Joao, attend to their guests exquisitely. They treated us as is we were dear friends visiting their home. Others have commented on the truly special breakfasts. We can only second these statements. The breakfasts are incomparably beautiful and tasty. While the rooms are indeed small, they are extremely well appointed and the renovation of this very old building has been especially artistic. It's special to be in an old building yet have everything so charmingly modernized. The location is perfect for not only an exquisite view of the Douro river, but also for walking over to the port houses on the other side of the river. A delightful and memorable experience.

What more can I say. If it was possible to give 6 out of 5 then I would not hesitate. The other postings are extremely accurate and I really cannot add to such favourable reviews. It was well with the experience. Especially Carmen and Joao who make it so memorable. If in Porto then the Guest House Douro is THE place to stay.
