We had a very pleasant evening here - arrived late but we were give a table straight away and our order was taken quickly by our friendly & efficient waiter. The recommended (inexpensive) wine was really good, and having eaten fish every day for s week, we decided on a change. My chicken in red wine was terrific - classic French style Coq au Vin with rice. My husband's roast chicken was exactly what he asked for - good though not tremendously exciting to my mind. Perrfect, simple creme caramel finished off a good value meal with excellent service.

I was recently in Porto with a group of 9 girls for a long weekend. We were looking for a low key traditional restaurant and Adega Sao Nicolau was recommended to us by the hotel. And it didn't disspoint! All my friends really enjoyed the tour dinner; overall we had a great evening and a very pleasant experience, thank you for your effort!

Typical local restaurant , good value and hidden away from the main Ribeira in Oporto. Recently renovated with a vaulted wooden ceiling this was busy with locals at lunchtime- always a good sign! Good fresh local dishes and a well selected wine list at good prices.

Adega S Nicolau is a pretty centrally located place, just off the Cais da Ribeira. We worried it might be a bit touristy, but it seemed plenty of locals eat here, and this was confirmed by a charming elderly Portuguese couple who we sat next to. They recommended local specialities for us and we had a tasty octopus with rice cooked in its ink. The sparkling vino verde was very fresh too. All in all a meal for two with wine cost Eu 25, they put 4 bacalao fried balls on your table, these are it complimentary. I gave it a 3 because althought the ambience and food were good the waiting staff just really stressed and not particularly friendly.

Recommended at our hotel and full of locals, but it proved to be very disappointing. Constant hustle and bustle by the waiters was a big distraction. Anything we wanted to eat was gone when we tried to order. We should have walked, but instead tried some really so-so dishes. The only time the waiter was pleasant was when he was presenting the bill.
